I am trying to choose between medical and dental school. i'm leaning towards dental (because of better hours) but deep down i want to go to med school. my only concern is my health. in 1998 i was diagnosed with stomach cancer. i had half of my stomach removed and part of my espoghagus. i now have severe acid reflux and after chemo have a lot of thyroid problems.

i guess my real question is from what i have heard and seen is that med school is intense in time and energy and residency is even worse. is that all just a lot of talk or is it intense enough that i would breakdown physically??

Hi elderjam

No one knows for sure if you would break down under medical school pressure. Medical school is intense and demanding and in my opinion it is not just talk. It may vary slightly from one school to another, factor in individual student variations, it is still like taking a zip out of an open hydrant. Best wishes for you making your decision.

I think the best way to make a decision like this is to gather more information. I would find a medical student that will allow you to shadow him/her for a day or so, and see what life is like. Do the same with a resident, and see if it is something that you think that you can handle. Also, seriously ask yourself what your motivation is for going to medical school, and if these motivations might not lead you down a different career path. Good luck!

Keep in mind that Dental school is not a walk in the park , infact many people will tell you dental school is just as difficult as medical school.

Ya, do you really want to hear the sound of that drill???
