Hello all,

I am a nontrad predent trying to figure out my classes and take the DAT in August. At the present time, I will be able to get in gen chem 1 & 2, bio 1, and ochem 1.

So here is the quesiton,I will have one more course that I can take, but I don't know if it should be bio 2 or ochem 2. I will be taking ochem 1 during the first summer session and either bio 2 or ochem 2 the second session.

If you had to take the DAT in this manner, would it be better to take it without bio 2 or ochem 2. I am taking gen chem 1 right now in the winter session and it is a lot, so I know that ochem will take a lot in the summer, so I am trying to factor this into my decision because it will greatly affect my DAT study time.

As much input, good or bad is appreciated.

Thanks.

Without question, I would take Bio 2 over O chem 2. There is not much O Chem 2 on the DAT, so, what you learned in O Chm 1 and through your additional studying will be sufficient for the DAT. Bio 2 is a necessary class for the DAT in my opinion.

I agree with the previous post. I took the DAT without Bio 2 and O. Chem 2 and it definitely would have been most helpful to have taken Bio 2. I was able to teach myself most of the necessary O. Chem 2 stuff from my O. Chem 1 knowledge. The amount of Bio 2 info makes it difficult to learn independently.

These two responses are along the lines of what I was thinking. Someone recommended I try and take bio 1 and 2 at the same time. What are the thoughts about that?

Also, I haven't gotten any study materials yet, but how will I know how much of ochem 2 stuff to learn? Will the kaplan books and such show all of the necessary material?

Thanks again.

The Kaplan Blue Book is more than enough for organic. And I concur with the above posters. If you have to choose, take Bio 2.

i also totally agree about taking bio II over o.chem II. i took the DAT with only o.chem I under my belt and was fine.

Taking bio1 and 2 at the same time is a good idea. They are very different. One does not build on the other. At least in my experience.

If anyone has taken bio 1 and 2 at the same time, I would love to hear your thoughts. I had three bio professor say not to do it. Any thought?

Take bio one and two at the same time. Both are not very difficult courses. The part about the DAT that is hard, with the bio section, is the fact that it covers such a vast area of information. You need the most exposure you can have and a bit of luck as well to get questions you know. I wouldnt bother with Ochem II, just learn what you need out of the Kaplan books. This doesnt mean that there is not any Ochem II on the DAT, but just that the stuff that is there is rather straight forward and can be leaned fromthe Kaplan books. I would then use the extra class for either a cell bio class or a physiology class, they will help the most for the DAT.

i know i have plugged these books a zillion times on here but they were AMAZING help for me on the DAT---Biology the Easy Way and Chemistry the Easy Way

kaplan was NO help for me on the subject specific portions. my gen chem score a WEEK before the test was a 15 on the kaplan tests!!!!! and my bio was i think around a 20. so, freaking out i grabbed those 2 books from the public library and ended up with a 23 on bio and a 20 on gen.chem.

i had not taken gen. bio in 7 years and gen. chem in 6 years!!!

also, i agree that bio II doesn not require bio I to do well. i think it is totally doable to take both at the same time.
