A bit of a segway, but since life has gotten so good lately ... with all final decisions just around the corner. Lots of planning, and another big move in a few months, while trying to squeeze in all the fun stuff I wanna do before med school!

Come on guys! What's everyone (non-trads) doing this summer? New hobbies? Traveling? Workin' some more to save up a bit? 🙂

I'll start the list:

medworm: sailing, uke, salsa, lots of trekking, tidy up the finances

I don't matriculate until the summer of 2007. This summer I'll be going to work from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and then going to class from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m and working on my homework and studying when I get home.

The good news is that after this summer I'll be done with my prereqs so I get 11 months without any kind of school to focus on hobbies and other things.

Things to do this summer:

1) Study for PhD qualifying exam.
2) Maintain order among my 5 undergraduates interns.
3) Work on PhD thesis project
4) Water polo games, swim meets, good times.
5) Sit in a summer class on something interesting.

Pretty straight forward.

Don't know if I've formally introduced myself in non-trad yet, have been lurking much and posting some...

I'm 29, currently a social worker in Montreal, and I went back to school 3 years ago to qualify for med school. Did pretty well, am graduating this summer. Applied widely to Canadian schools with not much success (long story) but did get an interview at my first choice school. I'm pretty sure I'll get in: OK, a bit overconfident here - but with 135 interviewed (incl. me) for 74 spots, and my "non-trad EC bump", I'm daring to dream...

So, summer plans. Traveling, relaxing, working (my job is not very demanding). Also (possibly) buying an apartment and fixing it up. SO is buying a car so lots of road trips probably. And, big one, finally starting a good workout schedule that I can keep up when med school starts.

p.s. teehee - a segway is that motorized standing platform... (not trying to be a b*tch, just remembering how funny it was the first time I saw one on TV, like WTF is that thing?)

I have a sort of busy summer I guess. 🙂 I'll be starting some volunteer work, selling my home and taking a Biology class during summer session...all while working at my usual job.

I have to finish up at my job. My last day is June 23. I close on my house June 28. Then we're moving to southern California! Woo-hoo! So the month of July will mostly be settling in, unpacking, getting my son accustomed to his new environment, etc. etc. And hopefully some basic relaxation before school starts mid-August. 🙂

I will be doing research with an assistant professor at one of the local medical schools, volunteering on a peds ward and a newborn nursery, as well as taken about 4-5 classes over the summer. 😳 I'll be busy

BUT ... I'm taking off 3 weeks in August to go home to visit parents and friends back on the east coast. 😀

I'll continue to work my 24 hr shifts as a Fire Fighter/Paramedic, I'm taking two classes, and will be coaching a youth hockey team(this will be my last time coaching). We will be going to Italy for two weeks before school starts in the Fall.

I am going to quit my grunt job next month -- 36 more days, but who's counting? Then we are going to my 20-year high school reunion in June so we can look for housing in Chicago. Finally, I think we are going to try to squeak one last fling in before classes start, so we're going to try to spend a week in Club Med.

yay! another social worker! hi, trustwomen!!!!

so my plans are to organize and pull off an open house for my office, then to fly out a day later to the Old PreMeds conference/mini-vacation to see my college roommate. I'll be taking physics II as a 4-wk summer session in July... working now THREE jobs (all some version of part-time) b/c I'm a total glutton for punishment. season tickets to our city's outdoor theater group... family coming out in August for a few days to check out the new baseball staduim and a couple of games.

According to one of my clients, I apparently need to get a tan this summer. She was saying she can't wear shorts or a skirt without one, then pointed at my legs and said "So do you just not care what people think or what?" 😱

ChuckaZulu -- Italy rocks!! You must go to Cinque Terre, Siena, and do an aguriturismo stay. 🙂

I have the same problem. My legs reflect like snow and blind people. 😀

Nah, she's wrong. I am a redhead and my only color is burned or blindingly white. Maybe I'm an exception to that rule. 😆

Sounds like you have a really busy summer, but it'll fly by due to it. 🙂

Getting married and racking up credit card bills to pay for it!

My tenative plan is to move down to Texas, establish residency, and reapply. I've got interviews for research engineer positions at Baylor Medical Center and Texas Scottish Rite Hospital, both of which happen to be attached to medical schools.

I'm getting married in May then going on my honeymoon in Mexico 😀 After that I'm coming back to lab to finish up projects and train people before I leave. Then hopefully I'll be taking a much needed break- 1 month of no work, just laying on my couch watching TV or getting some sun and exercise!! Then I'll start my first lab rotation in July! It will be a busy summer but I'm actually really looking forward to it 🙄

After the MCAT, I start volunteering/shadowing.

After the MCAT, I have to apply to schools.

My pre-reqs will be done first week of May.

After all applications are submitted (sometime in June) my family and I are going on a LONG vacation somewhere fun (TBD)

Most of my summer will be spent volunteering/shadowing. Hopefully, I'll get some interviews (I believe that they start in Aug.)

All the while, I will be continuing to work full-time.

Pretty boring, except for the long vacation!

EXACTLY!!!!! Sounds like you, Cassie, and I are peas in a pod. Or maybe more like that white asparagus? 😀

My usual excuse is that I'm something like 90% Irish- the very dark hair, blue eyes, and ultra pale skin version of Irish. So I remind people that Ireland is not known for its beautiful sunny skies, therefore my people did not have much of a need for extra melatonin.

It's been really warm here this week (90 today), so I did a couple of my appointments outside today (nothing like dragging a 17 y/o on a walk against her will). I now have burned arms and my nose looks like Rudolph's. As I told a coworker- this was from about 2 total hours outside at 10am-noon in APRIL. And people wonder why I don't go out in JULY????

I hope she was teasing, because that sounds a bit harsh! Anyway, just tell her you're going to be a doctor, and that skin cancer is bad for you. 😎

I'm applying for next year, which means still working at my full-time job, studying for the MCAT, and volunteering at the local hospital. We are going on a family vacation at the end of April for my husband's graduation. Yay hubby! 🙂

My very exciting plans:
* Start volunteer work (I want to volunteer at a hospice, I should probably call around now)
* Take pre-calculus the second semester of summer school so that I'm prepared for calculus and chemistry in the fall
* Continue working out - register for and run a few 5-ks
* Spend time with my kids

My summer plans:

Taking 3 classes (Bio II, Chem II and Stats)
Teaching the Chem I lab (TA)
Working PT at a vet practice
Staying out of the heat and sun

Oldie

I hope to complete the process of picking a medical school. Once that's done it may be time to plan a move. Other than that? I wish I knew. 😛 My last day of work is this Tuesday, which means I'll have a little bit of free time. When I'm not being Mr. Mom, I plan to....uh, well, I don't know.

Oh the possibilities...

- Moving...already bought the house and currently renovating
- OPM Conf....can't wait
- Shadowing a Plastic Surgeon (and some other specialty that she is hooking me up with)
- Perhaps a menial "looks good for patient contact" job - already made contact, have secured nothing
- Independent study so that I won't forget everything I learned this year and have a shot in the dark for new stuff
- Of course, trying to get on a workout schedule that continally evades me
