whats plan b?

hey all.. i know everyone has thought about this question, but we haven't really faced it... whats everyone thinking of doing if they don't get into med school this year, i mean yes lets hope that we all do get in, but what really is our plan b? any thoughts? reapply, do a masters, DO, carribean, what? 😕
 
Nothing wrong with DO. I hear very good things about osucom. Sadly this is already plan B. Optometry wouldn't take me. :meanie:
 
Med school IS plan B. McDonald's just wasn't working out. Plan C is working as an engineer on a nuclear submarine.
 
I would get a law degree from a top five school, work 100 hrs per week for three years, make partner and pull in $500,000 a year.

I would use that degree to stick it to negligent doctors in multi-million dollar malpractice law suits. :meanie: :meanie:
 
I will try to get a job as a Biomedical engineer (my major) and reapply until i get in....Maybe get a one year Master program.
 
I'll have to dust off my MBA and my engineering degree and probably drag my butt to a headhunter and get some job in middle management...

Think about this one. I had this question asked during one of my interviews.
 
do people apply to both medical schools and graduate school, even though that might mean taking both the MCATs and GREs?

I was thinking of doing that (med schools and Grad school for clinical psych) just in case i don't get into med school
 
I applied to med school in the senior year instead of junior year so I did have a plan B. I did a postbac internship program (research) for the NIH for a year. The pay was relatively good-1200 a month-the schedule was flexible so I could take days off to go to interviews, and the work was easy and fun. If you are unlucky enough to not be accepted the first time, the program is for two years so you can have another shot at med school (one girl in my lab got accepted in UMB after her second year). That is one option. I knew people who went to get a Master in Public Health and then come back. Others go into Teach for America.

Heh. I'm already doing plan B a bit. I don't know how long I'd do it, but I'd probably ride the rodeo circuit for as long as I could before I got tossed. Hence, giving my money to orthopods instead of becoming one. 🙂
 
plan b = cirque du soleil, hell, i might as well do something fun and crazy :laugh:
 
For me, I'm sorta doing plan B before A. I got into one of them 6 year direct entry programs for Pharmacy. Now I have job security and can venture towards medicine knowing i have a safety net. I can either finish my PharmD degree and then go to med school or work as a pharmacist. Gotta see if there really is a passion to be a doc or not.

If neither MD or DO school works out, I was thinking of chiropractic/accupuncture school
 
I know tons of people on this forum have already said this...but my plan B is law school 😀

Having taken the LSATs...I know its a LOT (I mean a LOT) easier to get a 170+ (98%) than it is to get a 35+ (97%) on the MCAT.

And law school admission is a game ENTIRELY based on numbers (GPA + LSAT + Ugrad institution + Ugrad major).
 
My plan B is continuing at my current job as legal secretary and reapply next year. The pay's good, and I don't have to think much. I wouldn't even think about law school now - I've had it up to here with lawyers and don't want to become part of the Evil Empire. 😡

Nah, lets see..for some reason the idea of going to grad school just makes me want to throw up. I dunno, seems extremely dull. Prob see if I could get a job as a tech in the ER (they do everything..almost) or do more research and publish like a champ.

Defintely just make sure you can defend any Plan B option to an interviewer. They love this question because it really makes people squirm. No matter how an interviewer asks it, a lot of people hear "Since you are really tanking this interview, what are you really going to do with your life?"

Just deliver your answer as calmly and cool as possible, and move on!

I always found that funny, but that might be just me. Back to topic : there was no plan B. It was basically '' ?a passe ou ?a casse ''. Oh wait, I forgot I got accepted in pharmacy...
 
There are lots of plan b's: DO, Podiatry, Nurse Practitioner...I think it's always important to have a backup plan, especially since the ONLY thing I want to do is some kind of medicine!
Just my opinion!

HELLO PEOPLE: DENTAL SCHOOL.

hours: 37
vacation weeks: 12-16
pay: 250k+
boss: none

its interesting how the cream of the crop doctors go into dermatology (cleaning pizza face) /opthal (lasiks all freakin day long) for the lifestyle that dentists enjoy.
 
I'm 34 and this is my first try... even though I've been trying to do this for 10 years. I'm taking the MCAT on Saturday. I've applied to 21 schools... 15 allopathic and 6 osteopathic. My GPA is AMCAS 3.42 and AACOMAS 3.55. My practice tests are averaging 30. I'm Mexican American, single mother of three (one is now married and in college, the other two are still dependent on me), fluent in Spanish. My LOR's are great, IMO.

*sigh*

If I don't get in this round, I plan to:

Plan B: Apply again next year... in case taking the August MCAT hurt me this cycle.

Plan C: Continue working as a Medicaid Outreach Worker (pays very nicely and it's satisfying work... bringing access to Medicaid to the rural poor, etc) and prepare to apply to a Nurse Practitioner program.

It's my fervent hope that I don't have to resort to either of my backup plans....

I'm really beginning to worry about this. I've already been shot down once (albeit a different field). I can't keep playing this annoying game of working my dead-end student job and praying some school takes me.
 
If I get asked that in an interview, I'd tell them that I'd go postal and execute the families of all the interviewers who turned me down.

For serious? Probably pharmacy. I really don't want to do DO/Caribbean.

While dentistry can be cush the above is not how the average dentist operates.
 
If medicine is your passion then you won't be happy being a chiropractor. The people who are the most disappointed in my profession are those who wanted to practice medicine but settled on chiropractic because they were tired of waiting to get accepted.

Plan B is to be persistent. Keep applying, keep interviewing and keep shadowing. You will eventually get in.
 
Plan B: Reapply again if I don't get in the first time. I pray I won't have to make a decision about applying a 3rd time. 😱. In the meantime, I will apply to post-back Clinical Science program at a cancer center here since it lasts only one year.

Plan B/C: I have also considered Clinical Pharmacy, Critical Care combined with master's in Physician Assistant studies so I can assist with the physician (clinical trials) with drugs used in liver disease of critically ill patients. I'm sure there's a shorter route...but that's not what the op asked for. 😀
