Anyone know if waitlists this year are moving unusually slow or if its only a few schools? It seems to me that compared to previous years, this year has seen little or no movement post-May 15th. I know many schools though had movement, but it seems that a majority of them have not begun to take many ppl off. I'm not sure if the delaying in movement is possibly due to more applicants or simply ppl waiting to get off one waitlist in particular and holding on to acceptances they dont' really want to be at. A

Anyways....waiting sux

i dunno... the lists that i am on typically have a pretty good amount of movement, and it's just not happening this year 🙁

man oh man, its hard to tell w/ the schools I'm WL'ed at.....sometimes I wonder how representative the SDN population is of the entire applicant pool. I'm WL'ed at WashU and UPenn

i second that notion

Just wondering what your DOvMD take is. I am in at UMDNJ-SOM and waitlisted at SUNY Buffalo. I REALLY don't know what I will do if I get off the SUNY waitlist. The waiting sucks and I am really opposed to the thinking that DO schools offer a 'lesser than' experience... ANY Thoughts?

Which school did you like better? Which area would you rather live in?
How does each one complement your professional goals? Is one school considerably more expensive?

If the MD v. DO thing is not an issue for you, then you need to ignore that and compare the other pros and cons to decide what to do if/when you got off the waitlist at SUNY.

If you are worried about the DO difference, there are many old threads addressing this issue that you can search for, but I think it tends to get overblown in this forum.

Hi jopdo, I have seen you posting this question couple of times. I would suggest that you should start a new thread in both DO and MD forum with a catchy subject 😀 so people can respond. Anyways, I am waitlisted at UMDNJ-SOM and I was initially very enthusiastic about it; my only weak point was I applied late. Anyways, now that I have made up my mind for reapplying for 2005, I am not looking forward to hear from UMDNJ. I was initially attracted to it because it was the only instate school I had a chance at ( i live in NJ) and it is not too far from me. I like the DO philosophy as well. However, when I visited; I did not take an official tour, my friend showed me around, I realized that almost everyone I was introduced to did not seem too excited. Most of them were like, "why are you coming here"? I know that many of them went there just because they did not have a choice and they were troubled because they did not want to work as hard as those with MD and still deal with a DO degree, so that is why they were kind of down. Others were concerned about their competitiveness for good residencies, eg radiation oncology ( I don't think it is even offered there and it is very hard to get in). What I gathered from my visit was that I should go to UMDNJ only:
1. If I don't accepted at either Robertwood/ NJM
2. If I am not planning to enter a competitive residency and am mostly looking at Family practice etc..
3. If I am not particularly obsessed with the title of an "MD" rather than a "DO" next to my name.

I would say, unless you don't want to leave NJ ; don't care abt being a DO and are looking at some kind of family specialization, you should go for it. Otherwise, you should go for Buffalo unless you are repelled by a lot of things there. These are just my.02 cents, hope it helps. If you don't want to sort out this quandry, just pray that you don't get pulled off of waitlist. This might work 🙂

Hey, back to the OP's question, I believe they are moving slow because for the first time in years there has been an increase in number of applications in both MD and DO schools (I think it is around 3% for both). I think our premed advisor sent us an email about it to discourage me! Of course, I'm not sure how significant that increase is affecting waitlist movement, but I'm sure it contributes to some of it! Well, I'm also on a waitlist, good luck to everybody!

To go along with the previous comment, I think a lot of classes are oversubscribed this year (one of the schools that I am waitlisted at told me this point blank). I think it is a little irresponsible of the med schools to accept a lot more than they can actually take, but given the fact that students do get multiple acceptances, I guess they have to do it this way.

One piece of encouraging news is that as some schools do start earlier, those of us on waitlists at "later starting" schools might have a better shot really late in the summer.

Here's hopiong 🙂

I think it's encouraging that schools like UCSF and JHU have seen recent movement. For comparison, last year's wl movement thread shows that neither school accepted anyone after late May. It's very likely that someone getting off the wl at those schools would already be holding an acceptance to open up a spot for someone else and start a cascade of wl movement 😀 (ie good for those of us still hoping)

The thing that I don't understand is that schools always over-accept, every year. Why this year are so many less applicants withdrawing? It seems to thrown off the whole balance, not to mention my life!!!

I completely agree with you guys. I've been waitlisted a couple of schools that usually have a pretty good movement, however I haven't seen too many ppl this year getting off wailist at these schools. Its not making much sense, but all we can do is hope.

i know that UVM has had no waitlist movement and probably will not have much. I think the same as well for Drexel. NYMC has had a fair amount however, luckily for me, as it is my only acceptance so far.

Last year Buffalo was into the bottom portion of their waitlist on June 25th. This year they're barely into the middle.

I don't understand? Has it been a domino effect?

hey hope are you sure about drexel's waitlist? I've heard they take a lot of ppl off the list in pervious years, but this year has been real slow.

Unfort. from the information that I have, Drexel is reducing their class size by 25 and not much waitlist movement has happened yet. But there is always hope as accepted people get off waitlists at other schools.

I wonder what's up with the suny Upstate high-priority list. It is seemingly lifeless.

hopefully there will be a "threshold" where the schools all of a sudden really start rollin' and pullin people off as we near crunch time...it seems odd that of ALL years, this year is the year that waitlist doesn't happen. The statistics should be consistent regardless of timing...but who knows, maybe its my bad luck

Or maybe this year schools are just overaccepting less and less people are receiving multiple offers?

It depends on the school, really. Just from reading this board, you can easily see that some schools are having a great amount of movement (Yale, UMich, Cornell, Hopkins, Penn and Pitt to name a few), while others are stuck in the mud (i.e. Columbia, NU, Duke, MSSM, USC). It's a somewhat relative situation.

flash is right. it's REALLY hard to guage how many initial acceptances a school sent out. it's also not possible to know how well the schools interpreted their applicants desire to be there.
