I know how it is for MD schools. Is it pretty much the same for DO schools? Would having the app. verified but waiting till October 1st to submit the app to schools be too late?

Thanks again! This is the last of my newbie questions hehe.

I think you'll be fine submitting October 1st (as long as you get the secondaries in by October as well). While obviously the earlier the better applies, I'd consider Nov and later to be truly "late."

I heard a general rule of thumb is to send you secondary no later than 3 to 4 weeks after you receive it. Some schools like PCOM actually stamp the date that they send your secondary to you, if you wait a long time, you could get them annoyed with you. October is really late, considering that the competition intensifies the longer you wait. Most people who send it in May or June will be early. I think you might be alright if you send in your primary in July or August.

This is pretty late even if it's verified. AACOMAS told me that it would take about 2 weeks after adding schools for your application to get to them. MSUCOM considers submitting after June 8th to be late...

@adem wow are you serious? how many people are even verified as of now? i looked over to the verification thread and only a very few handful are even verified, thats ridiculous!

When I visited MSUCOM a while ago, they gave me a sheet that reads "ALWAYS APPLY EARLY: AACOMAS application in no later than June 8; completed secondary application, including recommendations, in our office by August 16; (No exceptions, don't wait for MCAT scores, don't request recommendations from individuals who can't do them promptly.)" Maybe they don't consider it to be late if you haven't submitted by June 8, but the feeling I got from the advisor was that if you want to get in, you should have it submitted by this date as their admissions procedures are very aggressive. The advisor also said they hope to get their class pretty much full by December.

I wasn't really considering MSUCOM... but, yeah after looking it up MSUCOM's AACOMAS deadline is also about 2-3 months earlier than most other DO schools so it would def make sense to have your stuff in about 2-3 months ahead of the general timeline. I'm not applying there so I hadn't really thought of it..

haha you don't have to submit it by June 8th if you have your LORs done already. I can submit my primary in early July, have it received by the school, get their secondary, send it in immediately with the LORs since I already have them, and be done with everything by mid-August.

plus, this is straight off the MSU website: "Map out your class and MCAT exam schedules to have your completed application in our office no later than the 3rd week in August of the application year. "

I applied to MD schools last year..I doubt the osteo. apps are any different. It doesn't take 3 months to be completed as long as you submit your secondary in a timely manner.

omg...MSU is probably one of the best osteo schools, somehow ranked #7 in primary care among all med schools, and the average #s are 3.5 and 26-27 MCAT. hehe seriously? I can't wait to apply to some DO schools! They'll actually WANT me unlike most MD schools! haha

The fact is that DO schools operate on a rolling admissions basis, the longer you wait, the more competitive it gets. Its best to get your primary application in as early as possible, sometime by mid June would be ideal. If you start sending primaries in October and then get secondaries in November it becomes uphill unless you are some kind of exceptional candidate.

ok well I'm just going by what they told me at my meeting with one of their admissions counselors.

Just remember, there is late and then there is SDN late.

I feel like this is a little demeaning to OM, but maybe it is just me.

I applied to only DO schools last year with a 3.9+gpa and 30+mcat. I applied to 7 schools between August 1st and Sept 20, and recieved interviews from 6 out of the 7 schools. However, I also applied to 4 schools between Oct 6-15th, none of which granted me an interview. Does this mean anything? Probably, not. Nevertheless, I'd still advise you to complete all of your secondary applications before October.

Hey guys! I’m currently an undergraduate student applying to medical school this year. I am scheduled to take my MCAT August 6, 2009. The Question is; should I submit my application now or should I wait until I get my MCAT score? Any advice would be extremely helpful. Thank you!

Hopefully class f 2014

Submit now so that it'll be verified and then once your MCAT comes out you primary will be ready to go. If you wait until after receiving your MCAT to submit your primary you still have to wait 4-6 weeks from that point to be verified.

+1, submit ASAP! They will get your MCAT very shortly after your score is released.

Once you submit your app to be verified nothing else can be done or changed on the application right? So if you do submit for verification the app. has to be exactly the way you want schools to see it basically..

You CAN change something on your app during verification, but it will delay the process for you. Once it is actually verified, then you can't do anything.

so what do you do if you're submitting before an mcat retake, and need to make sure the new scores are shown? or does that not count towards changing the app?

No, that doesn't count. In that case, you're only updating the app, which isn't done manually by you (you're only releasing the scores to AACOMAS).

So would it be wise for me just to submit my app now even though it is not 100% complete? I'd say it's about 90% done, just need to finish the final details on my PS and little details on the EC's.....should I submit for verification now or should I wait till everything is done?

You have to wait until all sections are done before you submit. Take your time, finish everything (100%), and then submit. If you find out that you made a serious error, then you can contact AACOMAS about changing a part of your application, but this will essentially restart your verification process.

Late is when no school will accept your application. I submitted my AMCAS on Dec 1, and AACOMAS around mid-December. Plenty of interviews, a few acceptances.

Though I don't recommend it, that's just how the cookie crumbled. I say, eat the damn crumbs.

Read your MDapps profile! I have similar stats to you and here I am worrying that my retake in four weeks is going to make me late. You give me hope! Great story.

Go get 'em, tiger!

The postings about MSUCOM are pretty surprising. I'm scheduled to take the MCAT July 31st. My premed adviser told me to call them and see if this would be too late, and whoever answers the phone at MSUCOM said it should be fine. 😕

yea but look at his ECs. he has really good, unique ones for sure. he has full EMT training, which I guess isn't rare but still great clinical work. he also has the newspaper activity which i'm sure makes him stand out like woah to adcoms. his stats really should not have given him multiple MD interviews. it was definitely his unique app. congrats man!

I actually wonder if being ridiculously late helped me get noticed, too. Like, "who the hell is this guy?" Can't imagine many other apps showing up that day.

I don't have anything much to add, except that I have applied "late" both times I've previously applied to medical school. The first time my D.O. letter although requested in July, did not get sent in until Jan. The second time I was just dragging my feet because I was nervous and didn't verify until December.

I have been wait listed twice, and was all but directly told last year that I would have been admitted had I gotten everything in earlier, but by the time I interviewed in April the class was already full. So my advice is to 100% finish you AACOMAS app ASAP, if you are retaking the MCAT AACOMAS will automatically update, and if you are retaking a class you can often mention it some other place on the secondary. Applying late really can keep you out of medical school.
