Okay, I know this has been discussed before but I'll ask away anyway. When is the real interview season. What are considered early interviews and how late in the year do interviews go? Thanks for your replies.

i believe the hot and heavy of it will start in earnest around November, im about to go through it myself so we will see.

Most general surgery programs interview between Thanksgiving and the last weekend in January; some will only offer 2-3 days during that period, others will offer many more options. There are exceptions, but that's when you'll have the opportunity to go on multiple interviews per week. I averaged 2/week in the period, with a slowdown for the holidays. Some people did more, but I think the pace would be pretty insane if you did more than 3 a week (and 3/week is pushing it).

I had interviews from September to February. It depends on the program. Get your application done early so you can get an invitation to interview. If you wait too late, all of the slots may be taken.

Do not worry about interviewing later rather than earlier. If you get an invitation and make the interview, you will be ranked. Most programs do not interview people that they are not interested in ranking.

The last two years have been brutal to scramble for categorical surgical slots. Get your application done early and apply to enough programs across the board to get 15 solid interview invitations. If you do not get enough interview invitations, apply to more programs. Again, apply early.

Just out of curiosity, what do you consider "early" vs "late"....if you would like to interview early, when should you submit your applications by?

I was wondering if you guys have any advice on interviewing at your home program. I've already been offered an early interview at mine (October) and it'll be my first. How do you ask questions at a program where they already know you and have helped you apply, where you already pretty much know the bad and good from having talked to every resident in the place? It almost seems tougher!

Hi there,
There is no rule that you HAVE to ask questions. Believe me, they are going to ask lots of questions of you. When asked if you have questions, reply that you do not have any and keep moving on.
