Hi,

I'm a junior planning on applying to dental school next summer. When's the best time to contact recruiters and start applying for the HPSP program? Also, do we need to have anything besides 2 teacher recs and rock-hard bods😀?

Thanks
B

I would get in touch with a military health care recruiter next summer as you are beginning to put together your interviewing trips. There is an application packet that they will provide you that will state what all of the requirements are. One of which will also be a physical at a military facility. The recruiter will help coordinate all of that.

It's never too early. Get in touch with a health professions recruiter in the branch you're interested in. You won't commit to anything by talking to them so get in there now!

I just talked to an army recruiter that told me they dont start on my application until I get my first acceptance. Is that right? Another told me that you should apply as you as you submit your AADSAS. Any tips SDN?

This isn't true. I started my application with a recruiter over a year before I even APPLIED to dental school. The military makes their decisions at the same time dental schools do. Let's say you get accepted to dental school on March 10; you'd be too late to get the HPSP... this makes no sense at all. You aren't the one that "fills out" your military HPSP application, the recruiter does that for you. He or she should be able to get most of your paper started, get you through MEPS (I did MEPS almost a YEAR before I was accepted to dental school!), take your GPA and DAT scores, etc. at any point in time. Maybe my recruiter was just on the ball but I hear time and time again that recruiters are telling people to wait for an acceptance. This just flat out doesn't work. The exception would be a 3-year scholarship.

I believe you begin the process prior to getting an acceptance, but your file is not sent until after you have your acceptance letter. If there are any problems (waivers needed), you want to iron them out early so that your application doesn't get held up.

You can get in contact with a recruiter whenever but they won't start the process until they have a DAT score and GPA for you and think you have a likely shot of being accepted. So generally you would start the applications concurently, as long as you have started by october you should be fine -- keep in mind, sometimes the recruiters need a little nudging. If it has been too long since you've heard form them keep contacting them!

contact a recruiter when you're applying to dental school. although, there's no harm in contacting a recruiter now for an info packet or something.

when it comes down to applying, if you have all of your stuff in early enough for the 1st board, you can be accepted for a scholarship pending an acceptance letter from a dental school.

edit: and when it comes down to applying, prepare to do a lot of paper work. they'll provide you with all of that. my advice is to get the physical done a.s.a.p. because i'd say that's like 90% of the HPSP application process (provided that you've already taken the DAT and have begun applying to dental school).

Just curious, historically when does the first board usually meet?

first board this year is in the next few weeks. i'm willing to guess that the first board usually meets in beginning/mid october, right after the fiscal year starts
