When Does Internship Actually Start?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You always hear about July 1st, but is there stuff that goes on before that (particularly for the Navy)?

I'm just trying to figure out if I took ODS in May to the middle of June if I would be late reporting to internship.

You may be a couple of days behind the other interns, but not a show stopper. Actual internship begins on 1 July. The time prior is for orientation and house hunting. During that time you take classes on the various medical record computer programs you will be using, ACLS, and the stupid mandatory training on HIPPA, EO, Rights and Responsibilities, etc.

I think I've managed to work it in earlier, so it won't be a problem.

Any idea when we can expect to hear from our programs? My husband's work needs to know ASAP.
How long before this are we allowed to move and get it paid for?

At NNMC, the tentative start date for the intern class graduating in 2011 is June 7, 2010. The time between that date and July 1, 2010 will be spent with orientation, getting your military paperwork filled out, doing ACLS, learning the computer systems, and other random stuff. You'll probably have one day where you work "side by side" with the graduating interns on the services to which you are assigned for block 1. Your clinical duties start on July 1st, and you will get your rotation schedule a day or two after you report.

Do we start getting paid on July 1 or are we paid for the orientation time?

Kind of related question, can HPSP students get permissive TDY to do house hunting prior to starting internship orientation?

If your talking about checking in and then doing house hunting, depends on the command. Some may give you the time.

If you are talking prior to initial checkin, no.

So should we arrive much earlier to finish up the house hunting and move/situate the family before starting orientation? Or will there be free time to do this during the roughly three weeks before July 1st?

Also, who is the HPSP's Transportation Office? According to the www.militaryhomefront.dod.mil/moving website and it listed a MEPS station close to my home of record - should I pursue them or go through something centralfor HPSP to initiate a move/request packers, etc...

Thanks!

You will be paid from the date you check in. I was lucky enough to get the correct amount of pay for the mid-June paycheck, but some people didn't get their paycheck until July. Regardless, it will be retroactive to the day you check in.

Also, I would recommend finding housing and moving before the check-in date. You will be kept (somewhat) busy during those three weeks, and although there will be lots of downtime, you may have issues with pay, Tricare, scheduling, etc to work out and might not have much time to take care of domestic matters. Better safe than sorry.
