When is it a good time to apply for DO schools?

Hello, currently I am a junior right now and I am planning to be in a DO school beginning Fall of 2018. I have taken most of my courses required for most DO schools and I am taking the MCAT in April.

When should I start applying for the ACCOM, getting letter of recommendations, personal statement, etc.

When should I start applying for the ACCOM, getting letter of recommendations, personal statement, etc.

Pretty sure the AACOM application doesn't even open until May. You can start getting letters now, and brainstorming PS now too.

The DO cycle is considered "longer" than the MD in that you can get your apps in later in the year and still have a good chance of success. But if you're taking MCAT in April, you'll be able to get all your stuff in by mid May at the latest. The earlier you apply, the better, obviously.

Start drafting your PS over winter break ('17-'18.)

Start asking for letters in the fall of '17.

Apply through AACOMAS the very first day it opens (sometime in May.)

While you're waiting to receive secondaries, PRE-WRITE THEM so they can be stellar (you probably won't receive secondaries until ~mid June.) So from May to June, you should be writing.. at the very least for your favorite schools (you can find all of the prompts on here in the school-specific threads.)

Afterwards, relax and wait for the interview invites to roll in.

By far the most useful pre-med resource I have read is this ebook on Amazon. It is a MUST READ! Medical School: Little Known Secrets to Getting In by Dr. Adrian Aaron. I learned some tactics to getting in to med school that I would have never thought of. It definitely helped me get in!
