I am fortunate and grateful to be accepted to one medical school this current cycle. However, I have been dealing with a new and treatment refractory chronic health issue this past year. I'd like to keep the condition private to maintain anonymity. I'd like to ask my school if I can defer a year to try to get to the bottom of my condition/ cure it/ or treat it. However, I am worried that if I ask my school, they will say no because my condition is a neurological condition that would affect my performance in med school.
I have an appointment w/ a specialist at a tertiary hospital at the end of June. I have a small bit of hope that he will be able to help, treat, or cure me.
so what should I do?
Should I just start the conversation w/ the school now? Tell them that I'm dealing with this condition and will likely have to defer if my appointment at end of June is unsuccessful?
or
Just wait until I see the specialist and ask to defer afterwards if my condition is ongoing?
