I've assigned 4 LOR's (3 of which are in ERAS).

if a program requires 3 LORs minimum, is my application "complete" after they've received the 3rd?....... or will it remain incomplete until the additional 4th LOR has been received?

I ask because i'm still waiting for that 4th letter to get into ERAS and would cancel it if it's going to delay my status.

Disclaimer: I have no experience with the filter,

but

I bet they can filter based on the number of documents- i.e. if they require 3 LORs then the filter would be for 3 LORs (because they download as documents come in, not when it's 'complete'). Therefore since THEY choose what the filter filters, they get what they want to see.

Go read the programs website. They will tell you whether they will automatically complete it at three letters. Most programs are going to constantly check for updated info and unless they specifically say only 3 letters (which a lot do) then you are probably ok.

Each program can decide when an application is complete -- anywhere from 0-4 LOR's, +/- USMLE, MSPE, etc.

More importantly, if you've assigned a 4th letter that is not yet uploaded, I cannot tell at all. All I see is three letters, and I have no idea that a fourth is forthcoming. So, most programs will review your app. When the fourth letter comes in, it will be flagged as something new to review. If the fourth letter never comes, I'll never know it ever existed.

So any program which req 3 LOR's (which is most) will see your app as complete now
