Well i'm a freshman and didn't know if I had what it took to get accepted to medical school. I wasn't going to quit without trying and i knew i had the will to succeed. So I took a semi heavy workload in my first semester. Did very well in Biology, actually one of the very few A's. 4.0 overall for the semester and now I have a lot of confidence going into my second semester. I didn't want to start ec's till I had confidence in myself. Should I start right now or should I wait and just focus on academics?

You can never start too early, find something you enjoy so it doesn't seem like a chore.

Definitely start now, as it will be better to start now than to try and cram in stuff later on. I would recommend starting off with something light that would just be a few hours a week that way you can ease into it and not overwhelm yourself and maintain the confidence you have. Then later on you can take on more because you'll have a better idea of how much you can handle.

Definitely one of the best advices. You don't want to overwork yourself. Something simple like volunteering or shadowing is perfect at this stage. I started volunteering the 2nd week into the first semester doing just Saturdays, 4 hours. It's perfect because you can knock it out in the morning time and still have time for yourself/studying/partying/etc. later on in the day.

I did the same thing. I would absolutely recommend this.
