I heard that each year, residents take inservice exam. What time of the year is it ? Does getting a good grade have any significance in applying to competitive fellowship ?
I would appreicate any information about this test.
Thanx

hmm...I recall hearing that it is in the spring (April-ish)? Most places have told me that it is used for your own measure of improvement through the years and unlikely to impact fellowship applications. I suspect it is program-dependent, though. Has anyone heard differently?

The scores are somewhat anonymous in that only the prog dir and you know of them...Its a good gauge for both of you to see where you stand.

For fellowships it matters where you come from, who you know, and how your letters are.

Good luck

The RISE is in early May. The scores do not impact fellowship chances. The test is simply a way to gauge your progress, as Global said. However, I wonder how good of a gauge it really is. I scored at 4th year level for forensics without having had any forensics except for a month in medical school. And I know residents who have scored better in 3rd year than in 4th or 5th year. Also, the program directors only see scores from subjects in which you have had rotations (you have to fill out a survey at the beginning to indicate which rotations you've had). The scores for areas in which you haven't rotated don't count in the final score that the director sees. I don't think it's a great predictor for how you will do on boards. It is a good way to see where you are and what you need to improve on, though.

What does RISE stand for ? R~ Inservice Exam ?
And where can I get information about this test ?
Thanks.

Its "Resident In Service Exam." Alot of specialties have them, for example for OB-Gyn its called the CROG.

I'm sure CAP might have information on it, but I really don't see why yuo would want to check it out, its not that big of a deal to study for months in advance. As previously mentioned its more of a gauge to see how you are progressing in your residency and what are the areas of deficiency.

BCMD is right in that it is not a "great" gauge at that...I took it (optionally) as a Post Sophomore Fellow and scored at a 3rd year level on Forensics (alot of it is gross photos which are easy to interpret).
