When should I change my status from pre-med to medical student?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

Sure it's a silly thread but some medical students complain on SDN accepted guys like us aren't just medical student yet.

So are we considered medical students the day of orientation or the start of class?

Orientation. Same for residents. Attendings on the first day of work.

The first day of orientation when the dean looks out among the horde of smiling faces and says "we got you by the balls now".

When you tell your friends, "I'm in medical school" instead of "I'm going to medical school", you are a medical student.

Silly thread indeed. Why are you so desperate to have that medical student status?

Not desperate, just something I observed in the allopathic forum that some med students griped about and wanted to clarify when accepted students are "officially" med students.

I find that they really hate the non-sensical MS-0 title as well.

One time when I was shadowing somebody asked me where i was on the spectrum (as a non-trad I look closer in age to the attendings) and I proudly announced I was an "MS negative one". You could have heard a pin drop in the place, and everybody pretended they had no idea what in the hell i was talking about. I mean, these are smart people who can presumably count backwards from four to negative one, but no.

Drop the MS-0.

MS-0

i always thought it was silly, especially if it's really early in the application season

I was talking to some current medical students about how I was an incoming medical student, and they were actually the ones who said "Oh so you're like an MS-0" haha

I bet they were the ones who used MS-0 to designate themselves. I think this entire issue is silly. The medical students who even care to make the distinction between people who are about to start medical school and who are actually in school sound really petty and pathetic that I seriously would not give a damn what they think of me; not that I would ever use MS-0. It's like being called a loser by a REAL loser.

For the people who actually use the MS-0. Drop it. Coming up with weird label to associate yourself in anyway possible with medical profession/education means low confidence.

Time to change everything now!

If someone with a status of "Resident" or "Fellow" or "Attending" posted authoritatively in a thread, most people would assume that the person is actually who they say they are and take the advice more seriously than if a pre-med made the exact same post. It's the same idea with accepted students changing their status to "Medical Student" months ahead of time.

I really don't care whether you change your status now or wait until school starts. I just don't have the time to dig through someone's post history to confirm that they actually started school and that the advice they're giving regarding medical school (and I've seen plenty of "MS-0s" doing the exact thing) is actually based on experience. That's the only part that bugs me, because now, I have to dig through someone's post history (unless their signature or whatever gives it away clearly) and not just take their advice automatically. If that makes me "petty and pathetic", so be it. I don't see what the big issue is with waiting till you start school before changing your status. Like someone else mentioned, do you tell family/friends/colleagues/etc that you're currently a medical student or that you're going to be starting med school in the fall? Just use that as a guideline on SDN as well.

Edit: When I say "you", I don't mean specifically you FattySlug.

Videotape yourself changing the status and post it on facebook. Make your friends jelly.

here in south africa medical school is 6years. first year is biophysics, biochemistry, biology, psychology and POME. second year is anatomy and physiology and POME II, third year is anatomical pathology, pharmacology medical psychology, microbiology, and POMEIII. fouth year is forensic medicine, community health, chemical pathology, clinical pharmacology and POMEIV(clinical rotations included). 5th and 6th is clinical rotations only. as you can see from the list, everything gets closer and closer to clinical medicine as you go higher so its a culture that everyone gets to mock at his juniors that they are not actually studying medicine. the pattern continues until fourth year. then you get to be mocked about how you are just decorating in the ward without doing anything worthy and your head is "hyperressonant on perccussion"

my point is, people will always have a go at their juniors. it will never stop.

not if you're old and a postbac!

Hence my use of the phrase "for the most part."

If you're enrolled in med school and taking med school classes, you're a med student. Otherwise you're still in undergrad/grad school, or an SMP, or post-bacc, or on a "gap year," or taking a year off, or working, or beefing up your app, etc.

The first day of orientation when the dean looks out among the horde of smiling faces and says "we got you by the balls now".

I heard the Deans keep them jarred up on display in an old converted wine cellar under their respected offices. Most get them back after graduating, but it's by barter system: usually a "balls for balls" trade straight up or some sexual favor. The stories will haunt your dreams.
