Hey guys I need advice on when to apply next application cycle. I have a 3.9sGPA (AACOMAS), and 3.85cGPA (AACOMAS) with a 28Q, with a breakdown of 10/6/Q/12. I am obviously going to retake because of verbal, however, if I wait for my new MCAT score I wouldnt be able to apply until i receive my scores back next September, which is very late. Should I apply EARLY with my current stats, or would I have a better chance by retaking and scoring higher on verbal, and then applying in September.

Also, I am Canadian.

Thank you

You can apply and state that you have retake scores pending. Obviously applying early helps out a lot so definetly do it. Is there a reason you can't retake until August (if you are getting your scores in September I assume that is when you are retaking)?

If I state I have retake scores pending, will they still review me as an applicant with my current scores (i.e can they send acceptances with a students current MCAT if they state they are also retaking to improve?). And I will be retaking in August because I'd like to follow SN2d's 3 month plan, and hopefully nail it.

It depends. Sometimes they will accept your score as is and send you interviews/etc, and sometimes they don't like what they see, so they put you on hold to review later when your new mcat score comes it.

I would apply asap.

Okay thats good to know. So I will apply early, and, if they like me they can accept me with my bad verbal score, and if not, then they can wait for my new score.

People are typically accepted like this at MSUCOM:
Primary App > Secondary App > Acceptance (no interview)

MSUCOM does screen MCAT scores, your composite & verbal meet the screening requirements which will allow you to receive the secondary. The secondary is a lot of work, and you are required to get 2 evaluators to complete special evaluator forms for you (LORs not accepted as a replacement). Also, MSUCOM has an aggressive rolling admissions policy. Word on the street is that the 2016 class was filled in Early Nov. I would recommend being complete with the secondary late August.

I suppose that in your case if you are going to take your MCAT in early august, and receive it in early september, that it would be fine to wait a bit longer to submit your secondary and thus use your newer score. Your old MCAT score will allow you to receive the secondary (you won't be screened out). Good luck.

EDIT: Although your verbal is low, I think you will be competitive as a canadian applicant even without retaking the MCAT. Class of 2016 has a 3.66 GPA, 27 MCAT. Check out the current application thread to see some individual stats. Obviously if you can retake the MCAT and get a couple more points on that verbal that would be optimal, but I really don't think it will be in your favor if you are taking the MCAT in september and have to wait for October scores. That could hurt you considering what I mentioned above. If you come over and visit, speak to the admissions advisors at one of the sites, they are really helpful and awesome. I will predict to you though that they will definitely tell you the same thing, you need to apply early.

I agree with the above post. If you are Canadian the key is to apply early. You can look at the website and it shows what makes an ideal applicant. Unless you are planning on applying to Ontario medschools, then I do not think you need to retake it at all. Plenty of US DO schools that don't really look at verbal. I can think of 4-5 that you would get interviews at, as is.

Really? I thought all medical schools required an interview. Any other schools that will accept candidates based on primary application? This will save a lot of money on traveling expenses when I apply next year lol.

Keyword I used was "typically". Most (NOT all) matriculated students are not asked to interview. However, like I mentioned, the secondary is quite extensive, and when you start working on it you will soon realize why interviews aren't mandatory for everyone, lol.

What other schools did you have in mind?

LOL I got you. Congrats on getting into MSU! That is one of the schools I'm going to apply OOS.

You say that now, but wait until you get the monstrosity of a secondary they have. I sent in my primary, and when I got the secondary, I laff'd, wasted some good printer ink on it, and then shredded it.

Wow, that bad? I better sharpen my writing skills haha.

OOS tuition is a bit hefty for MSU just FYI

That's what I heard, but I want to have some options with DO schools if I can't get in anywhere in Cali.

The secondary is 2 reference letters from anyone that knows you well using their forms, one essay and a list of EC's, Volunteer, and Work Experience from high school to present. Didn't really find it that hard and I've been out of school for 10 years. Can't imagine it being difficult for a traditional student.

Well, being bombarded with secondary essays from 10+ schools, ones that will already accept LORs you have waiting in Interfolio, plus the fact that MSUCOM has high OOS Tuition (I know, scholarships), and the fact that I wasn't really into moving to Michigan was enough for me to shred the secondary 😉

Hey everyone,

I apologize in advance for my post not being relevant to this thread, but I did not know where else to post. Does anyone know what percentage constitutes a 2.0 gpa for MSU COM?
For example, is a 62 a 2.0?

Thank you in advance.

When has a D ever been considered passing for a class? 2.0 is a C (75%) in a course, and that is MSUCOM's minimum for an acceptable grade for a class. The percentage is dependent if your school uses +/- when taking your GPA into account. You should consider retaking the course because AACOM does grade replacement.

By most course standards (unless you're instructor has a curve), that is a D/D-, which will count as a 1.0 toward your GPA.
