Right now, I'm at a community college. I have been accepted to a 4 year university and plan to finish up my pre reqs there. I am currently taking CHM I and BIO I along with other courses. In the summer, I plan to take CHM II so I can take OChem I and II next year. Should I stack BIO II on top of CHM II in the summer or just wait until next fall?

The answer to this question will depend largely on who you ask. But, if you ask me - I would say.... Don't do it man!! lol!

First of all, Bio II is nothing like Bio I. Bio I, was actually interesting. Bio II makes a huge u-turn and turns into a memorization fest dealing with classification of animals and microscopic organisms. I absolutely hated Bio II. But, that was just me.

I also found Chem II to be very challenging. You have to remember, both of those classes have a fairly heavy lab that go along with them. And, if your university is anything like mine, you will have to take a total of 2 labs a week per class over the summer. I think it would be super easy to get in over your head with both of those classes.

If you want an A in both classes, I would say don't take them together over the summer. If you don't mind a B, then it would not be too bad.

That's just my opinion. 🙂

Chem II was more challenging than OChem I for me. I think taking any chemistry course over the summer isn't the best idea. Not only do you need that info for the PCAT, but a lot of the theory is used in Orgo and BioChem. This is a class that you want to learn the info, not just get it done over the summer.

You also need to figure out when you are taking the PCAT. You'll need the info in Bio II for much of that.

If you are looking to matriculate to a pharm school in the fall of 2013 you will obvious have to take ochm I and II back to back next year. This means you have to take chm II in the summer. You have to do what you have to do, but I would NOT stack the two classes on top of each other in the summer. A summer class is 2.5 hours a day, four days a week plus a 3 hour lab, 3 days a week. These two classes on top of each other would be an 11 hour school day on M - W, plus a 5 hour day on Thurs... with a guaranteed test in each class every week. The chemistry lab reports alone 3 times a week will be enough to drive you insane.

The only thing of value I have to add is that if your school does two summer sessions, you might consider off-setting them - do Chem II in Summer I and Bio II in Summer II. Summer classes at my local CC aren't really my cuppa tea, so I can't say what's "too much."

I lol'ed because it's true. Bio I had a general flow to it. Bio II seemed like a grab bag to me. I only preferred Bio II to Bio I because of the professors - my Bio I professor "required" attendance, but read the book to us aloud during class. My Bio II professor was a semi-shy hypocondriac.

Thanks for the replies. I don't plan to apply to schools until fall of '13 so I will have plenty of time. I think I'll just take BIO II in the fall.

bio is memorization. just commit the time.
