I am studying now while In school and all through winter break up until January. Should I take the dat January 6th or January 14th? Which is better because I have to register early and idk which to choose. January 6th would be at home while January 14th would be during first week of school

when do you apply for dental school?

If you are applying for the 2018 cycle, you can take it on either of the dates you mentioned.

If you are applying for the 2019 cycle, I would recommend waiting until the summer

Personally, I'd do it January 6th at home. Although first week back at school might not have much going on in terms of work, I'd like to get the DAT out of the way in case the school work does pile up. You never know. Plus, you'll have more distractions to deal with at school. Your friends might want to hang out the first week and social events might happen during that time. Just make sure you feel prepared by the 6th.

Thanks. You think that gives me enough time to prepare if I do it on the 6th?

I think having two solid months of studying is ideal, so if you study consistently starting now up until the end, you'll be golden as long as you don't fall off track and use your time efficiently. Will that be enough time for you? Reflect on your study habits and see if you can do it within that time frame. If you feel overwhelmed, maybe you can push it back to spring break instead. Only you know yourself 🙂 Remember that it's not about quantity, but rather quality. You can put in all the hours you want to studying, but it won't matter unless you study wisely. Do make sure you take some breaks, especially with the holidays approaching for some family time!

One extra week between the 6th and 14th can either make no difference or all the difference. By that I mean if you half-ass your preparation and all of a sudden it' January, then that one extra week can definitely help you catch up. But if you study a little bit each day and increase the hours as the exam day approaches, I think you can prepare well for the 6th.

so i can see youre studying during the school semester. its good that youll have winter break to study! studying while taking classes is not impossible but nonetheless very difficult. remember there is huge difference between making the cutoff for a cycle deadline and putting adequate time into studying for the dat. dont take the DAT just to meet a deadline. ideally you should only have to take it once, so give your first try all your strength effort and attention. dont rush your studying just so you can take it in january, if you dont feel prepared, live to fight to another day and take it early in the summer. just my 2cents.

Idk if it will be a solid 2 months because I have finals in the first week of December so besides that, I will be studying for the DAT and attending class but winter break I will be sitting for 12 hours a day and studying. If I take it the 6th, I will have studied from December 10 until January 5th versus the 13th if I take it January 14th. Keep in mind, I'm learning orgo 2 on my own

Yeah, studying during the winter break and winter semester of school is going to have its challenges with end-of-the-year finals, Thanksgiving, Christmas (or whichever holiday according to your faith), and New Year's. If you have the discipline to stay diligent in your studies, then that's great! I know I wouldn't, but if you think you can do it, then by all means go for it. Are you sure you can't postpone it for another time? December 10th to the 5th of January is a little under 4 weeks which I think is pretty short. It's doable if you put forth the effort now little by little each day, but like I said, there are going to be interruptions within that time span with the holidays.
