My family is planning a summer trip for late summer and I want to make sure it doesn't interfere with my application process so I can schedule around it. I know we can submit applications starting June 1st and then secondaries as they come. What's the earliest day that I'd need to make sure to be back by for interviews?

Tldr; what's the earliest interviews have been known to start?

I've seen people interview in August but mostly you're looking at late sept-mid march.

Usually these places give you options for days and usually you have multiple options (often times a month out). But there are definitely exceptions. If schools give you interview dates too close I'm sure you can call the office and get it changed.

Just take the vacay and be back by sept.

So you think as long as I'm back by early August I'll be 100% safe? I'd definitely be back by late August/September regardless so just trying to figure out how late I can push it haha.

Only a few schools interview that early. The smartest thing you could do is go on 2017-2018 school threads and see when interviews came out. If none of the schools you are applying to sent anything out in August, then you can push it to sept. 99/100 they won't interview in august so you'd be fine. I wouldn't stress about it either way.

Only one school that I can remember interviewed in August (Georgetown I believe)

To answer your question, if you're back by early Aug, you're 100% safe. If you're back by Sept, you're 99.5% safe. I'd take a longer vacation and not care.

Alright thanks for the advice! These past few semesters and the summer have all been super stressful so I'm really looking forward to a nice vacation time.

I had my first interview on August 15, and 4 more by the end of august. So, just be back within the first week of August or to be even safer, plan the vacation to return the end of July

End of July definitely won't work unfortuantely but I could come back early August. Ouy of curiosity did this school assign you August 15th and expect you to be there or did they give you a choice?

They assigned me that date and told me that if I couldn't make it, I had one opportunity to reschedule

Ok that's pretty reasonable then since they have a reschedule option available. I think I'll still try to plan to be back by first or second week of August to be safe. Thanks!

As I tell all students, with the AMCAS primary as well as 15-25 secondaries, applying to medical school should be considered a full time job from early May until at least thru August if not September. This does not count any time needed for possible interviews.

I already have my primary application ready (just revising my personal statement more still) and have started prewriting some secondaries as well so I should be able to get them done before even leaving.

I believe some of the Texas schools start interviewing in July. I definitely met some people on the interview trail who had begun interviewing in July. If you're super competitive, you can expect interviews to roll in early and the earliest you will be able to schedule for most schools (excluding those that interview in July) is mid- to late-August. You can always schedule a few weeks later than that if you're still going to be on your trip. Only a few schools give you an arbitrary date and don't let you pick.

You'll be fine with the trip, just make sure you have internet access so that you can respond to interview invites if they do come.

Internet will probably be slow but should be available for most of the trip (except for on the flights but that shouldn't be a problem).

Applied to a similar list of schools as what you're projecting, and my earliest interview was at U of Chicago approximately Aug. 15.

Somebody has a spreadsheet that tracks interview invitations per month per school in their signature. If you can find it, take a look. 99% sure you'll be completely safe.

Ok thanks! Looks like August 15th was mentioned a few times. I won't be applying to Texas schools so not worried about the July ones. I'll probably aim to be back by August 6th or 7th for now and if it looks like I won't have any interviews till later o can just delay it longer (I'm planning on coming back ahead of my family and it's so much cheaper to get tickets now).

I never see signatures since I'm always on mobile so I'll probably never find it haha.

Be aware that you may also get some secondaries in late July/early August. Some schools don’t immediately send those out, especially schools that pre-screen. If you pre-write and have internet you should be okay, but you should be prepared to revise and submit those secondaries while on the trip.

That also shouldn't be a problem. This will be partly a vacation but more just visiting family so not like I'll be on the beach all day or anything. Will have plenty of down time.

When did you have your secondaries in for these schools, out of curiousity?

DO school secondaries starting rolling in at the middle of June and my first MD secondary came June 30. My first MD II email came on July 19 from a secondary that was received July 5. I got all my secondaries in on the day or the day after I received them, which I highly recommend!
