neeky,

you wouldn't happen to have graduated from one of the five colleges, right? i'm also contemplating real hard on uconn.

reena :D

Univ. of Pennsylvania

Uni of Pennsylvania

eschou and baccurso, did you interview or get accepted to Uconn?

yeah, I interviewed there (it was my first). I haven't heard, and if you've read some of my other posts, I could really care less.

best of luck

I am definitely going to Baylor!!!!!!!

neeky,

ha! i graduated from the other women's college down the road in '99. i am deciding among penn, columbia and uconn... but heavily leaning towards uconn.

reena

reena,

what a small world! I also was debating about Upenn, but one thing I can tell you is that Upenn is better than Columbia..especially for people who want to specialize, and still get good clinical experience. They are both good schools, don't get me wrong, but my dentist back home and numerous other people in the field consider UPenn the best of the private...

Neeky

neeky,

why uconn over penn then? ;)

reena

reena,

ok first off, I check this board way too often.. I love to procrastinate..
OK the deal with Penn is that it is oh so expensive and the facilities were old to say the least and they have grades and class rank, I love the fact that UConn is on the pass/fail system..I think it will help a little in the competition factor, though I realize people are competitive everywhere....just a thought :)

hey neeky,

i've got to say i agree with you. :D

Narrowed it down to UCSF or UCLA.... I've til Jan. 15th... :p

hmm...how long did it take u to narrow it down to those 2?!! lucky u...i'm still waiting on 'sf, otherwise it'll probably be unc over ucla...let us know what u decide!

Hey guys...Got accepted to Pitt, CWRU, Ohio State, Michigan, and Detroit Mercy (everywhere I applied). Got a scholarship to Case and I put my money down there last week! Really excited about it! If anyone has any questions or anything please let me know.

hey waiting,
it actually took me awhile to narrow it down to those two, cuz i really liked UOP and U Penn... but I'm a cali resident so staying in california was best. If you get in to UCSF, will you choose it over UNC? Just trying to get more opinions on UCSF... why would you go there over UCLA or UNC? Thanks, and good luck... i heard that UCSF are sending acceptances out later this month!

Hey Lin,

I'm sort of waiting on 'sf for a few reasons...first, my family 'may' be moving away fro NC to the bay area next yr...it's about a 30% probability, but one I'm weighing nevertheless...also, as much as I love southern Cal, I ultimately envision myself settling down in northern Cal, it's more in line w/my personality/interests...Finally, I'm having a difficult time justifying to myself paying 60-70k more over 4 yeras to go to ucla over unc, two schools which are essentially identical with respect to reputation and how well they'd prepare me to land a great residency spot. In fact, I'd probably have a better shot coming out of unc as the research opportunities are greater here and it's a smaller school....However, UCSF is a different story...while unc, ucla, the ut's, mich, wash, etc. are all excellent state dental schools, I've gotten the impression that 'sf is in a class by itself. This is based on my talks with a few oral surgeons and orthodontists I know, the school's consistent ranking in the top 2 for NIDCR research funding, and UCSF's general rep as an international mecca for health professional training (right there w/Harvard & Hopkins). Honestly, I wasn't that impressed with their facilities, staff, or environment, I came away with the impression that they felt they didn't need to 'sell' themselves, they're too pretentious for that and know they're going to attract the best anyway....I guess I love San Fran and I could very well justify the extra costs for the opportunity to go to UCSF over unc (or so I still think)....Maybe it's just an ego thing or maybe I just think it'll open more doors...sorry if this just sounds like 'sf propoganda!! But that's just where I'm comin' from...have u decided yet??

Lin709,

Hey remember me from U of M??? I'm still waiting from UCSF (I just interviewed there this month). But in the meantime, I'm debating which school to go to. Which did you like better between U of M and UOP and why????? I reallly didn't care for Ann Arbor, but they have a good program with a good reputation. I'm just worried that with UOP, I won't get enough didactics...I looked at their class schedule and it seems like they shorten the classes compared to some other schools. Any advice? :D

I finally made the decision....I will be attending the U of Minnesota next year

Hey waiting,
AUGHH!!! i get different opinions from every single person i talk to... whether it be pre-dents, dentists, dental school students, or "normal" people in general. I'm going nuts over this UCLA/UCSF thing. I can totally see why UCSF would be a good choice for you... seeing that your family might be relocating there. Also, if you plan on living in sf/bay area later on, then it might be a good idea to go to school there to get used to it. As for me, i'm from the bay area, so i've been here all my life and totally see myself settling down here as a dentist. That's why UCLA is so appealing, because it gives me an excused to get away for four years, knowing that i'll be back in the bay area after that. I've also experienced SF and the people, clubs, etc... and find LA exciting everytime I visit. The Pass/Fail system still looks appealing to me, despite the whole EPR thing... I just think it alleviates SOME of the competition and stress. But i definitely agree with you that UCSF is in a class of it's own... but i'm still trying to decide whether or not that's enough to get me to go. A student there mentioned to me that their facilities are better than LA's... not sure if it's true... looked comparable to me. Still undecided and will remain that way til I near jan. 15th :p I'm also visiting UCLA and UCSF again this break to get a "better look" at the schools. Let me know what you decide to do as well!

caligirl,
What's up? So if you get in to UCSF will you be going there over UOP and U. Mich? I have to admit that i LOVED u. of mich when we went there for our interview. I loved their curriculum, facilities (altho the preclinical lab is pretty old)... and the overall atmosphere of the students and campus. However, i've been born and raised in "sunny" california my entire life, and couldn't even stand the low 40 degree weather while i was there (and i heard it was supposedly great weather for that time of year!). In short, I could not survive four years of extreme coldness. As for UOP, coming from their undergrad institution, i feel it almost my duty to clarify the whole 3 year thing. The year-round school year gets the didactics done with earlier than other schools... they don't "cut" out any courses or condense them (a friend of mine at UCLA compared lecture and lab times for these courses to his own schedule and found that both schools allocate the same amount of time to each science course). I don't know specifically how they do it, but they manage to cover it all. So if that's your only concern, i say go to UOP... it's in california so you don't have to move very far, and it'll make it a whole lot easier if you plan on working in cali later on. The major drawback I had with UOP was just their tuition, and the fact that they have fewer students getting into specialties than the UC's (something I kind of want to keep in mind). Hope this helps... lemme know how it all works out :)

For everyone that's torn between 2 schools, here's a trick I usually use to decide between two very tough things. I flip a coin. I know it sounds stupid but here's why it always works. If I'm truely 50/50, than I accept fate and take whatever the coin gives me (but I, like most people, are rarely 50/50). Therefore, if the coin comes up what the option that is tugging at my heart and the one I favor, then I'm happy for the reassurance. If it doesn't however, I'm not happy about it and refuse to accept it. Therefore, I choose the option that didn't come up. I know it sounds silly and you'd prolly have to be a little crazy (which I am) to use this for such an important decision, but it has never failed me and I've used it for a very long time.

LOL! :D Ahhh, but alas I just always end up talking myself out of whatever 'fate' has apparently chosen for me by convincing myself it can't be. For me, my co-workers have started a poll of where they think I should go to school! Then of course there are all my friends who each say "oh, I could totally you picture you at school 'X'"......of course, there's always darts .... :D  ;)

OK waiting, you have suffered long enough. I usually don't interfer with someone else's fate, but for the sake of your sanity, here is the real deal.

Get a rooster, a thigh bone from a rat, and a feather from a crow. Draw a circle three feet in radius in the dirt (red clay is best, but optional). Toss the bone and feather into the circle. Slit the throat of the rooster and let his thrashing about splash blood over the feather and bone. Count the blood spots on the feather and bone. More blood spots on the bone = UCSF. More blood on the feather = UNC. If it is a tie, then count the blood spots in the dirt within the circle. More blood spots in the dirt than on feather + bone = UNC. More blood spots on the feather + bone than in the dirt = UCSF.

Hope that helps. Groundhog psychic tips

You guys are hilarious! Baccurso, that coin-flip things doesn't sound like a bad idea... although I agree with waiting; whichever side it lands on, I'll try to convince myself that it can't be, and that I should go to the other school. So either way it wouldn't work for me because I'd favor the school that it DIDN'T land on... hehe... great, back to square one. But thanks for the idea!

Ms. Purtell have you decided where you will be going?

groundhog, LOL!!!!! However, what if the rooster in a final fit of desperate rage decides to attack me, lunges at my own carotid, and then I am the one left thrashing about in the clay circle togehter with the rooster? In that case, should I have the admissions directors from the respective schools serve as judges to this event? Perhaps they can then count whether the rooster or myself have splashed more blood on the feather or bone and then choose the winner (which will probably be the rooster) to attend their school? Now having a rooster in their roster (hah!), THAT would add some diversity to a dental school class :D :D

Hi "beyonder",

My decision is kind of being made for me. I can't get health insurance in CT because of a pre-existing condition. I'm still researching it because I want my options open, but I'll likely be staying in NY and attending Stony Brook.

Thanks for asking, Margaret
