The general rule on SDN is that if your school doesn't report it, it never happened but where would one even appear? I had a little situation freshman year but there noting on my transcript .
It could appear on your Dean's letter. Not all med schools ask for one though.

Usually it would only be on your transcript if it resulted in a suspension or something extreme. If your school has a pre med committee, they might mention it in the letter they write. Sone schools (like WashU) ask for a letter from your Dean describing your disciplinary history. Otherwise it's based on the honors system.

My school doesn't have a pre-med committee . So if i go to my dean and he has no idea what I'm talking about am i in the clear?
I know you might not want to share specifics, but we could offer better advice if we knew the general details of what happened. Right now it sounds like what you're describing isn't even an IA.

If you're talking alcohol violations, it probably isn't an IA. Had a couple friends with alcohol violations that were concerned, they stopped by the student records office and asked to see their records. Turns out those violations were through housing and not through the school, so they weren't on the record and weren't an IA.

Tl;dr ask your premed advisor or check with student records if your university has such services.

am i the only one who thinks institutional action refers to probation, suspension, expulsion and major events and not some silly alcohol violation or a warning? why wouldn't they just call it disciplinary action instead of institutional action...institutional action sounds pretty serious

For the purposes of AMCAS, an IA is anything for which there is an official record. If you got a "warning" that is noted on your transcript, it's an IA.

Basically i broke the rules of my dormitory and was sent to the the head supervisor of the CA's. Then since I confessed i didn't have to go in front of the student disciplinary board. I was instructed to do 5hrs of dorm community service (i had to file papers for about a week) fined $25 and was placed on dormitory probation for 1 year (meaning one more incident than i will not be allowed to stay on campus).

you're issue though seems on the edge. you were put on probation but you didn't go in front of the student disciplinary board (where disciplinary action is given im assuming). you could probably argue either way for reporting your violation

ask your adviser to be sure

that is so wrong man...first of all, I could have filed a report about another student and given it to the student disciplinary board - they would have an official record of the report regarding the student but it doesn't mean that there was any ACTION taken

second...no school would put a warning on a student's transcript. they only put suspensions and what not on the transcript

According to AMCAS:
You must answer Yes to this question if you were ever the recipient of any institutional
action by any college or medical school for unacceptable academic performance or
conduct violation, even though such action may not have interrupted your enrollment or
required you to withdraw.

So institutional actions are not limited to probabtions, suspensions, and explusions.

You know what I meant. Any record of the university making an official decision that the student did something "bad" is an IA. If the student was found innocent, this obviously does not count as an IA. Moreover a hearing where the student was found innocent would only appear on internal records, not external ones.

My point was that it doesn't matter how minor you perceive the punishment to be. If there is an external record of it, it's an IA. Adcoms will be more forgiving of some IAs (warnings/community service/alcohol awareness classes for underage drinking) and less forgiving of others (cheating/plagiarizing), but they all still need to be reported if there is an official record.

how is a warning from someone in the dorms considered an action by an institution...that's a pretty big jump in my opinion

AMCAS also provides guidance if you are unsure if something was an IA
If you are not certain whether or not you have been the subject of an institutional action, contact the registrar, student affairs officer, or other appropriate party at the institution for confirmation of your record

I would follow their advice in this situation
