Since we are going to be all poor at least during school, where did you guys all work during summer? how much did you get paid? Just curious. Inputs will be greatly appreciated. 😀

I'm doing auditory slice research at my undergraduate school. The stipend is 2700 for the entire summer and I calculated it out and it's just a tad over minimum wage. They say it looks good on your resume... We'll see. I'm currently searching for a part time job in a pharmacy, but NO ONE is hiring in the city I live in. Believe me, I've called them all.

i have also tried to call local phamacies for intern jobs but no one are hiring as well. i thought they are short on pharmacy staff? this doesn't make any sence. grrrrrrrrr..

You might be able to get your foot into the door by volunteering at a hospital pharmacy. Even if you don't at least you will have a little experience.

Not all retail pharmacy managers will want to hire you if they know you want to leave after a year. Many of them are looking for permanet employees. Sadly, a high turnover place is probably the most realistic place to find a short term job.

It is hard in the summer when all the pharmacy students have saturated the market. When they all go back to class in the fall, you will probably find more positions opening up.

I've tried volunteering but alas no one returns emails and phone calls. I do have a prof and some lady in the Career Development Office trying to put my foot in the door with some pharmacists they know, but it's been slow going and I think I'm on the verge of harassing both of them with my "have you talked to them yet?" every day.

It's soooo frustrating! I really want to have something related to pharmacy to put down in the job section of my pharmcas application and then there's that whole thing about wanting to know if pharmacy is really right for me before I commit myself to another four years of schooling for it...

I am in the same boat.. I need internship hours and nobody needs interns. They are either not that busy to justify another body in the pharmacy or if they are busy they don't have hours for interns. It appears that some chains have a specific number of hours allocated per store each week for techs and interns. You cannot even work for free if you need some hours.
And I need 1500 of them.. 😡
I am starting to wonder about the shortage in this field.. 😕

good luck finding..

It's the pharmacists they need... but they can't get pharmacists if they keep on shunning people who are trying to get to/get through pharmacy school. What a screwy system...

im volunteering in 2 hospitals this summer

I currently work at a CVS pharmacy but it took me a while to find this job. However, alot of pharmacy coworkers there complain about how bad the job is and stuff but the pharmacist there said something that really stuck to me. She said we should be glad that we have a job at a pharmacy in the first place cuase so many people cant find pharmacy jobs right now. After she said that I feel fortunate to be where i am and I dont take my job for granted anymore. Keep searching guys, you will find someplace that is hiring sooner or later

Once school starts up in the fall more openings will come. It's easiest to get a job from right before school pharmacy starts (interns stop working full time and go back to school) until about 1 month before school starts (most summer jobs start to fill). Alot of people from my class were having to look for quite awhile to find summer intenships in the Seattle area. If you are in a city with a pharmacy school it can be hard.

If you are looking for an internship, call district managers. If you want experience, contact individual stores.

As far as wages go...
In my area retail interns (admitted to school) typically make anywhere from $13 to $16 starting wage. Liscensed retail techs typically make $11.50-$13.50 to start. Cashier type positions (pharmacy assistant) pay lousy. Hospital techs and interns start at about $13.50 (union= little variation). I would think these stats would vary throughout the country.

I'm making $10 an hour at a privately owned pharmacy. All I did was send my resume to all the privately owned pharmacies listed in the phone book. I stayed away from all the Walgreens and etc... My job is pretty laid back. We are lucky if we fill 100 prescriptions during the day. The pharmacist is becoming quite the mentor for me. I'm learning all kinds of interesting things.

to get experience in a pharmacy, you can try working at a free clinic. there are lots of those around, but you dont' get any money. just great experience.

working at the pharmacy i've been working at since i graduated high school..just weekends though cause I am going to school also!

I know some places have jobs for pharmacy students, just have to show them you got accepted somewhere. Of course that's in Memphis, not sure if it would be anywhere else though.

Good luck. It's definitely nice to have a position before school starts. One less thing to do 🙂

ehhh everyone is finding jobs but i am not. ehhhh that makes me cranky... 👎

Hopefully something will come around soon for you

I had to go from hospital to hospital before I finally found a job. I think I must have personally visited 12 hospitals in the city. Each time I was all decked out in a suit with a resume on hand. I finally got a job at a large teaching hospital for $16.50/hr and I'm forever grateful.

Don't give up!

Yep. In the main inpatient pharmacy.

*deep breath* I GOT THE JOB!!! I GOT THE JOB!!! I GOT THE JOB!!! I GOT THE JOB!!! I GOT THE JOB!!! I GOT THE JOB!!! *happy dance* *happy dance* 😀 😀 😀

😀 😀 😀

8 bucks an hour starting out and flexible hours for when school starts.

I walked in and the guy was like "yeah, even though you've never worked in a pharmacy before, from your resume I think you're overly qualified."

I was thinking "THANK YOU!!! Could you please call the school I'm applying to and tell them that 🙂"

But of course I politely said thank you instead. I start on Monday!!!!!!

8 bucks an hour!! that's like minimum wage! (well sorta) but you pay for the experience. congrats. send the school your updated list of your EC. so they can toss the old one.

I posted my EC on pharmcas and I can't get back into it to change the stuff since I already submitted it. Hopefully, I'll get an interview and I can tell them all about my job then 🙂

I'm superexcited. To tell you the truth, I would have been happy with 7.50 an hour. I'm used to living off the hubby's paycheck quite nicely with just him and me and anything I make extra will be going straight into savings (i'm obsessed with savings). Maybe we'll pay off my car early 🙂
