I know a lot of us are counting on our state schools to admit us, and the expectation of the school is that we will practice in that state- often in our hometown, particularly those of us from rural or underserved areas. How many of you actually plan on going back to your hometown (or nearby) once you're done with school and residency?

Also, what would it take to get you to practice in the area where you are from originally? In my case, the following stipulations would apply:
Either:
-Full repayment of medical school loans
-Being allowed to practice as an EM physician, not some manner of tradition primary care doc

or

-150% of the highest salary offer I receive in a place I would voluntarily live
-No income tax for the first 3 years of living in the area (wouldn't this be a nice incentive 😉 )

I'm not originally from New York, but I spent the last 5 out of 6 years in Western NY going to school and working as an EMT. I moved around so much before college that I wouldn't mind settling down for once and being an EM doc (not primary care like you said) who serves the rural communities in NY. Lord knows they need those services badly.

I'm getting out of Indiana ASAP. Actually I will be out of here next May bound for Michigan, before I ever even apply to med school. I might stay in Michigan if I go to school there, but the Pacific Northwest seems like a much more suitable place- beautiful scenery, nice cities (Seattle and Portland), nice climate (yes, I like rain...), and best of all it's far from my "family".

I would love to move back to the Northwest but it's too rainy for my fiance. Going to school in the South but... I don't think I can stay here permanently. Right now I'm shooting for Colorado.

I do not foresee myself settling down in Maryland... I've been doing my best to get out of here since I was 17. I would probably come to the DC area temporarily for fellowship or something, but I would much rather live in a different city. And you couldn't pay me enough to practice medicine in my actual hometown in backwater Maryland. No freakin way.

I foresee myself in an East Coast city like Boston or New York, or possibly in Chicago, depending how I like it. I am open to practicing internationally part of the time (somewhere where I could work with interesting pathogens: Africa, India, Central or South America...).

I would probably settle on location if an amazing opportunity presented itself (like I'd move to Atlanta if I could study Ebola at the CDC, even though I'm not really into the South).

I'll come back to Texas for sure. But the state is much more varied than others. I don't know what city or what setting I'll end up with. (Wherever my boyfriend gets tenure-track I'm sure). But I know I want to do underserved medicine and there are ways of doing that in any city/town/rural area in Texas. (I can't speak for other states).

i'll probably stay in chicago if i can. i've moved around a little a few times but i always end up back here. can't live too far from the pain and suffering of being a cubs fan... 😳

In Alabama for atleast the next 4 years (born and raised her, too). Would like to settle in the Florida panhandle (hooray for no state income tax!).

I would like to go back to my hometown and practice, however, my hometown state didn't even interview me. I am, however, staying in the same geographic area (rural midwest) and am going to be staying in Kansas instead of Iowa, because they are giving me

actually, EM is probably not what I'm gonna do, I'll probably do IM, but both EM and IM are considered primary care.

Why Portland? It is so ugly when compared to Vancouver BC or Seattle (I have lived in all three cities).

I want to practice in Vancouver BC (1st choice), San Francisco, or Seattle. I love the West Coast and the city life.

Anywhere and/or everywhere. I moved 10 times when I was growing up so I am very used to changing environments. Plus every region has something good to offer. As long as I am safe, I don't care where I practice.

If you're an interviewer from a school that promotes rural practice, I definitely want to practice somewhere rural, so I never make money!

But in reality, suburbs of a big city.

The northwest coast? No way, haven't you guys seen that Tsunami special on the discovery channel? It could happen...and you only get like a 2 minute warning...at least hurricanes, you can see 'em coming with plenty of time to prepare.

I would not live on the coast (or within several miles of it).
