Where is dermviser?

Can we do a petition on Change.org to get Dermviser to go back to posting on SDN more frequently. I mean you should see some of these petitions.

I try (since I changed accounts... if I kept my old one I think I'd be a 10 year member in a month or so), but it's easier said than done. Back in my pre-med days I was able to figure out the real identity of a poster who was being somewhat of a repeated jerk on here with about 2 min of searching a school directory cross-referenced with facebook, based on what he'd posted. Turns out we had mutual "friends."

I'm about 99% sure I met a prominent current SDN poster this academic year when said poster interviewed at my program for residency.

Truth. I've made a few materially unimportant misstatements along the way, in an attempt to avoid taking all the challenge out of figuring out my identity... but one of my future classmates totally messaged me on facebook and was like, Hey, Promethean, is that you?

I am cool with that because I haven't posted much of anything here that I wouldn't say publicly under my own name. Maybe my strong criticism of a recent employer, but I gave those same criticisms in person, in my own voice, directly to management, so it isn't like they don't know how I feel or what I say about them.

These days, nothing is really private. Everything can be tracked and all data can be mined, if someone really wants it bad enough. But even before this was the case, I realized that if you live with integrity, it doesn't matter what people find out about you. It is still ideal to have privacy where you can find it, because it is convenient and there is dignity in it, but it is best not to rely upon having it.

Rule #1 of staying anonymous: never say where you are or where you've been in your education. This is easy on the allo forum, not so easy on pre-allo where everyone is talking about specific schools.
 
I do miss @DermViser threads. He had an uncanny ability to identify medical news snippets that rustled my jimmies like no other. He really stirred up allo into some pretty active and interesting discussions/debates. Who cares if he posted a lot? He contributed plenty, even if it was in an argumentative and sassy way.

Yeah, my username is a direct reference to my med school, but I'm not there anymore, obviously. My current specialty and location don't get disclosed on the pre-allo/allo boards. You kind of have to pick and choose. I can give good advice and discussion about where I went, but not so much where I am.
 
Did anyone even like DermViser? She seemed kinda mean and had a dumb opinion on every last topic on this forum

My anonymity isn't super important to me, personally. Anyone in my class would easily know who I was if they just browsed my posts a bit. But I'm myself on SDN, and if people have a problem with that, then I probably don't want to know them offline anyway.

Totally understand and respect the wishes of those that desire to remain anonymous though.

I'm kind of curious as to how this thread hasn't been locked from Day 1....isn't it a big thing on SDN rules to not start threads specifically about other users?

Or is it in a gray area of "call out" threads?

Grey area. No one is hating on him or being creepy. People are wondering what happened to him. That's fair in a community where people get to know and care about each other. If this thread had gone down the hate or creepy path, it would've been locked for sure.

Seriously, I thought for a while maybe they were the same person with a different handle as I never noticed DV posting before MedPR got the banhammer. I could have seen MedPR pose as an attending dermatologist. It was just hard for me to imagine a physician having enough time to post so much. In the end I enjoyed his posts more then I was annoyed by them. Any attending physician we get as a regular on the forums is an asset.

At the end of the day posting on SDN doesn't take much time. During M3 most of browsing was on the phone during downtime on the wards. Five minutes here and there gets a lot of SDN action in.

No one makes you click these links. And considering the amount of repetitive threads about the same damn question asked 30 seconds ago by someone else... this thread is actually more productive.
 
it's pretty common to start excessively posting on SDN, getting into arguments, thinking that you're doing such important things by shedding light on this journey that you've gone through but then you realize that SDN is lame and repetitive and that your time is better spent in the real world

for his sake, i hope he's just the last in a long line of individuals who realized that SDN is silly and that there are plenty of better ways to spend your time. @NickNaylor used to make VIDEOS for SDN and now makes a cameo in the occasional thread. @mmmcdowe is another example.

...then there are people like @fancymylotus :shrug:

Well, as an addendum, mmmcdowe is a neurosurgery resident at my institution. I hear they don't have a lot of free time to post even if they wanted to 😉

Sounds like he got offended by his suspension, and said "F it" to SDN. I don't blame him; some of the moderation here does seem unnecessarily heavy-handed.

The ones like FML and the loungers are people that hang out here because we've got people we know closely from the forums that we talk to and they are our primary reason for being here. Commenting in allo or pre-allo is a secondary endeavor to the social function of SDN.
