where should an ivy league student with low to average grades (3.2 gpa) and average MCAT score apply to have the most success of getting it? (resident of NY)
Schools in the midwest perhaps?
Where would this type of student have the highest success of being accepted?

D.O. schools, maybe instate allo schools.

unfortunately a 3.2 is very low for allo esp if only coupled with a average mcat. you could try and do lots of post-bac and get your gpa to 3.5 then you might have a chance.

i believe 3.5 and a 30-33 would have a shot somewhere if your applied very broadly. but remember there are other things besides numbers...

Why DO schools?

because a 3.2 is very low for allo schools.

i would also suggest DO, as well as some sort of post-bacc to raise the GPA. if the MCAT is 30+ and the ECs are very good (very good, not just good) then this person would have a decent shot at allo schools.

I had a 3.4/28 from H/Y/P. Did not apply with those numbers.

post-bacc classes and another MCAT: 3.5/33S.

Had great success in the process with those stats. And some schools do love Ivies, I think Case, for example.

BTW, some schools HATE Ivies because they have a record of not matriculating after acceptance. We were told not to even bother applying to those. Georgetown is one.

IMO, with a GPA of 3.2 and an MCAT score of 35+, with a steep upward recent grade trend and good extracurriculars, a student might be considered at some allopathic med schools, provided they didn't have automatic cut offs for a GPA that low.

Many DO schools have a cut off set at 3.0 which would give such a student a chance that adcomms would actually look at the rest of the application.

What are your volunteer and medical experiences like? Sometimes, the schools may look at your application rather than just objective numbers. In my experience and personal opinion, the DO schools seem to do this than the MD schools. In addition, I would consider may be trying to up your MCAT score a little more. Medical schools are more certain to take people with high MCAT low GPA rather than low MCAT high GPA if there is a discrepancy. In the end, I would apply broadly and have 10-20 schools in mind.
