Hi guys,
I am having trouble deciding where to apply for medical school. I live in Florida, so I am going to apply to all the schools here, but I am lost with where I should apply out of state. I graduated from the University of Florida, and took some post-bacc classes at USF. My total GPA is a 3.4. I improved significantly after a disasterous freshman year. I took the MCAT on April 26. My Kaplan MCAT scores ranged from 28 to 30. I am hopeful that I did about the same on the actual MCAT. Not sure if it helps, but I am also hispanic. I have done a good amount of EC. I am currently doing research and volunteering at an Assisted Living Facility. I would like to hear where you guys think I should apply out of state and what else I can do to improve my application? Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi Linesider5,

What i'm thinking is that you should be looking at some middle tiered private schools out of state based on your stats/exp.

here's a thread that might interest you

Out-of-state friendly schools

There is a must book for URM's applying (although I am not sure if you are URM but regardless it will be valuable) that you can purchase from AAMC the book is "Minority Student Opportunities in US Medical Schools" will break down by school how many minorities applied, were accepted and matriculated. I am URM and used this book to see what schools historically accept URM's, of course I am not going just by this fact, but using it as a tool to narrow schools down. Good luck!

3.4/28-30/urm/good ec's......I don't think the op should limit themselves to mid-tier privates. I think if he/she applies to all of the top 8, at least one and probably more acceptances will come. I'd apply to all the florida schools and then a lot of top privates. For safety schools throw in a few mid-tier privates

Thanks guys.....lots of real good information here. I am Cuban, and according to amcas, I am not an URM. I plan on applying to around 15 schools. I will take a look at that book and the link you guys posted.
