I'm from PR, my MCAT score is 30Q (10 in each part) and I have 3.8 GPA (general, higher in sciences). I have volunteering experience, as well as shadowing (PLENTY OF IT). Tried research, didn't like it, and withdrew (also had personal issues and would not have enough time do it right).

I always thought of just getting into a school in PR because on the public one the tuition per year is like 10k or something. The private ones are on the low 20k's. The average MCAT for the public school is around 21 (!!) and on the private ones it's lower.

I was not counting on getting more than 25 in the MCAT but I did. Now I'm wondering if I should actually give the US a try. I know it's a bigger debt than in PR but I am very competitive... I just got an email from UPenn telling me to consider their school because apparently my MCAT score is outstanding. I'm not too sure about that, 'cause there were like 50 more emails in the CC area... But there were only 2 from University of Puerto Rico, the rest included Harvard, Yale, USC, Duke, etc.

I know it's a long shot, but if I actually went to the US I'd be happy with a school that's someplace warm. I don't really care for big names. But like I said...I hate research and my MCAT isn't too great IMO.

Anyway I'm ranting, any thoughts?

PS: It's gotta be MD. If I don't have any chance I'm not gonna be destroyed about it.

Why?

And get the MSAR.

I've read about OD schools and they don't really catch my attention. And, correct me if I'm wrong, I've seen that getting a residency is harder.

About the MSAR, I have this excel file with all the basics that appear in the book (average MCAT, GPA, cost, etc). I failed to mention that what I was looking for is some kind of input from people who actually know about particular schools (be it from personal experiences, know someone inside, a relative that is an alumni, etc). The MSAR appears like just a bunch of averaged numbers.

And like I said, I won't be heartbroken if based on what I read I decide it's not worth the shot. It's just my imagination doing those 'what ifs'. I'd be happy with PR's public school, most graduates do get residencies in the US, the lower MCAT averages just mean to me that high school and undergrad education is mediocre (AND IT IS!!). I know that what counts toward residencies are the USMLEs and extracurriculars.

Damn, I was perfectly happy with my plans!! Stupid UPenn had to write me...

'Cause honestly I never considered the US for two reasons:

1) Family, friends, boyfriend, etc.

2) Can't consider the fact that I won't have an awesome beach half an hour drive away...

I guess this is my sign to step back on the Earth!

I was actually wondering if it was a URM thing. Also, shame on UPenn for being so non-tech-savvy.....There was no BCC, and I too could see every email. Most of mine were stanford.edu suffixes😛 Lame.

Maybe it is... I do know I signed up for info from Med Schools on the MCAT where it asked. But I never thought I would get an email from an Ivy League telling me to consider it. Oh well, let's see if something else shows up!
