I need to purchase the following equipment for my next semester. I was wondering if anyone knew a good place to purchase it and what the best brand would be. Thanks

Oto/ophthalmoscope – minimally with standard ophthalmology (coaxial) head
Blood Pressure cuff
Reflex hammer
Tuning forks – both C-128 and C-512
Pocket Eye Chart

This year, our school started giving all the students the equipment at the start of first year. In previous years, a lot of people used Ebay, and got great equipment for a good price. If you do this, make sure you buy from a seller that is covered by the PayPal protection.

I just talked to lady in the LECOM bookstore and we get 50% all the Welch Allyn stuff. She said mostly all M2's just order through the rep that will come to visit, since it's the best deal you can find.

I just looked around on amazon (no discount really on there) and ebay (found the opththalmoscope used for about $100-200 off the discount price). Anyways, I think I'll just order it through the rep.

The small stuff, like hammers and forks are like $5-10 in the bookstore.

I am in the same boat at LECOM. My question is if we need to get Welch Allyn specifically or could we go with another (read less expensive) brand. I have never used one of these instruments so if you could explain to a noob why I need to buy the most expensive (that I've seen) instruments that would be swell. Thanks.

From what I've seen around the Web the prices the school is offering is really cheap compared to everywhere else. So I wouldn't get to caught up on the school's price. But I do have my eye on a digital stethoscope...

All pathways have to attend the WELCH-ALLYN
Presentation on Friday at 8:30....I'll prob. just get what they recommend.

I was looking at stethoscope models and I feel like Im Harry Potter trying to choose which broom to get. The real question is which model is the equivalent to the firebolt?

Im probably getting a Littmann, I wish I could get a broom that flies though..that would be killer. I would be the best on-call doctor ever!

Having used the same Welch Allyn instruments for over 25 years, I can speak to their value. I have gone through three rechargeable batteries, three otoscope bulbs, and two ophthalmoscope bulbs...and I can still get replacement parts.

I use a Littmann Cardiology and a Littmann Classic. I have never had to replace the tubes on the Classic and have had to replace the tubes on the Cardiology twice. The refurbishing time was about 8 - 10 days and the service was excellent. Being frugal, refurbishing was much better than buying new.

As always...buying the best you can afford is sound advice...and because schools can buy in bulk the best deals can often be had with a class purchase etc.

Good hunting and welcome to the club.

just to toss out another opinion... I never bought the scopes. The few times I used them, i just borrowed a friend's. The only problem is the herd immunity argument, if enough people don't buy them, then you'll ultimately have a major problem, but if only a few people don't buy, then you'll be all set. My feeling, and again, this is just my personal opinion, is that as a medical student, unless you're independently wealthy, don't bother buying the big expensive scopes, if you HAVE to have a scope, just get a cheap one for now.

As far as a stethascope, don't skimp out on that. I like (and a number of the cardiologists I just finished working with) have Littman Cardiology III. That is one thing you'll use all day every day.

And what's up with a school REQUIRING you to go to a presentation by Welch Allen? Yeah, they've got great stuff, but requiring you to go? That's a little presumptuous in my opinion...

They didn't require us to go... just suggested that we go... sorry if it came out the wrong way

Just so you know, you don't have to spend $150 on a blood pressure cuff that you'll probably use like twice in your med school career. You can order one on amazon.com or buy one in a drug store or something for like $15 that will do the same job. However, I will admit that the really expensive ones from Welch Allen are nice, especially if you're not the one who is paying for it.

I like http://www.steeles.com/ because they'll laser engrave your scope for you. For the Oto/Ophth I'd use the Welch rep (The kit will come with an eye chart). For the other stuff you can get anywhere but allheart.com is really good.
