Hi, I'm a student in college in California and I received a C in organic chemistry. I'm trying to find somewhere to retake the class but I cannot find any college (CC or otherwise) that will allow me to repeat a previously passed class. If I try taking it at my institution it'll be marked as an "unauthorized repeat" on my transcript. How bad would this look when I'm applying to med school?

How did you guys go about doing this?

Thanks in advance.

Sign up as a non-matriculated student and you should be able to take it at a CC. I took mine at the local 4-yr college, but the consensus is that it shouldn't matter if you retake at a CC.

If I do that I'd need to redo the entire general chemistry series to complete the prerequisites ._.

however you end up doing it, make sure the credit hours are equal to or greater than the organic you originally took. I just redid organic 2, and didnt pay attention to the hours. After verification 2 weeks ago, i found out that the grade did not replace my old one.

I repeated a bio class , same college and everything but they split the lecture and lab when I retook it, would they replace this. 1st try- F 4 credits
2nd try A 3 +1 credit Lab A

Bump - Anyone? I tried looking at 30+ colleges. They either didn't offer Ochem in the summer, would not allow a C or higher grade to be repeated or were outside California.

Calling overall BS... You didn't reach out to anyone. Every college on the planet will let you take whatever you want, whenever. Actually reach out to the CC's in your area and I think you'll be amazed, boom you're enrolled.

I've emailed a half dozen state CC's/colleges and received the exact same response with a link to: http://www.californiacommunitycolle...SS_RELEASE_BOG_Repeatability_FINAL_050712.pdf or their policy.

Every UC has also told me the same thing with the exception of UCR which I haven't heard back on.

Again, I'm trying to do a retake of a class I've received a C in.

not believable especially coming from california. And why would you have to repeat the entire gen chem sequence? That makes absolutely no sense. Bring in an unofficial transcript from your home institution showing successful completion of gen chem and boom prereqs waved

Enrolling might be a problem since your registration time will be at the bottom of the ladder, but finding a place to take it is as easy as it comes.

what you're trying to do has been done successfully hundreds and hundreds of times over.

I'm sorry but you're coming off as a person too lazy to do their own research.

I know :/ but that's what advising/admissions keep telling me. If I send in my unofficial transcript to waive the prereqs, they'd see I'd already taken ochem and wouldn't allow me to repeat it. Every retake policy page for every college in CA that offers Ochem in the summer that I've looked at tells me the same thing. I don't know if I'm being obtuse or missing something obvious but if so please tell me. 🙁

It might be just about the instate rates...in florida you had to pay out of statw rates after so many attempts. If california just won't let you (and let's be honest logic is not really california's thing) then you take it at a private school.

You're being obtuse and missing something. If you can't figure this one out medicine probably isn't for you, just sayin.

I don't recall ever needing my unofficial transcript....they were just like "mail your check to...."

Mind elaborating?

They're enforcing prerequisites. No transcript = no prerequisite clearance.

I'm not in your state. I haven't had that problem. To get cheaper tuition, I even matriculated into a CC and since I've already obtained a BS, I was only able to transfer about thirty credits in and I was able to sit with someone and sort of pick and choose what was transferred in. I transferred in the general chemistry but not the organic chemistry, which I retook.

Try looking for classes online; they just usually verify you have the pre-reqs complete and you don't even need to send an official transcript.

I'm not sure what part of CA are you in but my daughter just graduated from UC and taking chem at CC. This CC asked her why she wanted to take this class which she has passed already so she explained them to get better grade and she was able to enrolled in. Yes, she had to send her unofficial transcript to them. Try emailing them. Btw, I'm in Northern CA. Maybe visit CC and talk to counselor even though summer classes has been started last week.

Called up a CC near Sacramento and they said they'd allow it as long as I'd never taken the class at their school. :clap:Literally every so-cal CC said no when I called. I wonder why state laws are different from some CC's than others.

OP,

i dont think you contacted all the UC schools. I am in the same shoes as you, and I have found one UC one Cal state and CCs allowing me to take ochem eventhough i passed. i wonder which CC you called.

Called Loyola, Sonoma, CSU San Diego, San Francisco and San Jose, De Anza and emailed Foothill - All said no. The adviser at San Jose told me the policy would be the same at every CSU. Also called all 3 SDCCD campuses with the same response.
Which UC/Cal State let you retake it? All I got back from UCR was a "call the dean" email.

I am a recent graduate from UCR, and it is UCR's policy that students with C or higher cannot repeat the courses.

I would contact your nearby colleges in your area. If you're aiming for DO schools for sure, then I would consider UNE online but you have to check with the schools that you're planning to apply.

Cal Poly allows students to take any courses through open university as long as you submit transcript and get approval from the dean. You should look into those.

Community College definitely does not have restrictions like you stated because the most CA CC policy limits the number of retakes to 3 times I believe. If you've taken more than 3 times already, that might be the reason why.

The policy unfortunately also limits passed classes:
"The new regulations, which were drafted with extensive input from the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges, will prohibit a student who successfully completes a class from repeating it,except under certain circumstances."

Have you tried Berkeley extension or another UC extension? Pretty pricey, but you can do it. Also try small private colleges.

OP, I just went through a massive amount of swearing and headaches over this same problem a couple weeks ago. I live in Florida and every college I researched seemed to say the same thing about not being able to retake classes passed with a C or better. I think a crucial thing that they leave out in the print is that this rule only applies to students trying to retake the class at the same school they received the original grade at. I'm pretty sure you won't have any issues if you retake the class at a different school.

...pretty sure at least.

yeah it was published in 2012, yet people were able to take classes at CC and got accepted into DO schools. If I read correctly, you cannot retake it if you wish to retake the same course at the same community college.
You really should look into open university or other UCs.
