How do I find out what programs are strong before interviewing and does anyone know what programs are strong in the south? I'm a MS3 and need to decide where to do my away rotations.

Duke, Vandy, Wake, UNC, UAB, UTSW

Just a warning ... If you do an away in general radiology at UTSW you will learn almost nothing about the department and even less about radiology. If you're looking for a 4 week vacation, sign up early cuz every student at UTSW wants to take it.

I would also throw Emory, UF-Gainsville, MUSC and Virginia in the discussion as well.

As they are also south of Mason-Dixon, U Maryland and Hopkins should also be mentioned for completeness. And MIR counts too, right? VCU, although not often mentioned in the same breath, is a very solid program, nonetheless.

Thanks thats what I needed. Just how competitve are these places? I go to an average state school but I have step 1 of 252 and will hopefully will be AOA, do I need to do research to help me out at these programs? I know I have a decent chance of matching somewhere but at one of these places?

You have a good shot... 👍

You have a good shot at just about any program you're interested in. If you're from the south, you will probably get interviews at many of those programs without doing anything more. If there is one place in particular that you're interested in, do a rotation there to help secure an interview.

Your application is strong, you may get interviews at all without any research. Research, showing you may possibly be interested in academics, may help for Duke in particular though. Vanderbilt may be a little more random than most in offering interviews. They seem to like people more from the south for whatever reason. If you are from the north and looking to go South, I would do an away there. Then you would likely get all those interviews.
