I have recently been accepted for the fee waiver, and thus I can apply to three schools for free. I want to know where other fellow applicants will apply to if they only had three choices.

Just a little background info for me:
I live in CA, specifically LA
I would like the school to be in an urban area.
I like to be in a area where it has nice weather.
I like doing research, but prefer to work in primary care
I would like to go to a school that has good match rates, or the school itself is well known throughout the nation (I don't know where to find this info)

I've been searching around SDN, and it seems like PCOM is a good one to go, or Western U if you're in CA. Thus my current picks are
PCOM
Western U
Touro-NY

Please share which ones you would apply to (DO schools only), and for what reason.

why just 3? it doesnt cost that much more to apply a few more

Agreed. If you are having trouble narrowing it down to 3 you can add a few more schools for a minimal amount.

That aside though--I'm not sure any of us can tell you which 3 schools would be best for you. Everyone has different circumstances so the 3 schools that I might chose (if limited to 3) might be totally different than the 3 that would be a better fit for you.

Good luck! 🙂

Part of the reason why I asked for three is to get a comprehensive understanding of other schools and why they appeal to certain people. I know we are not the same, but I would like to know why you're applying to X, Y, and Z school. Based on this, I'm planning to add more schools if necessary, but I'm also applying to over 30+ MD schools as well.

I have taken out which schools that I'm not applying to based on location alone, but that still leaves me with plenty of other great schools that I have no idea how great it is until I have more people's opinions. So rather than me just randomly selecting schools to apply to, I would like any additional reason that I can get from other applicants, and I know SDN is one of the places to go.

You could consider CCOM, they have a great program right outside the city of Chicago. I strongly considered going here.. From what you listed as important Western seems to be a good choice. There are two DO schools in NY, NYCOM and Touro-NY, I've heard good things about both. I really liked KCUMB; Kansas City is not the biggest city but it is by no means small. TCOM is pretty awesome, but it has a pretty heavy in-state preference.

I would add MSUCOM to the list because its a college town, so you can have fun in East Lansing. Most importantly you'd be at Michigan State University, so you can do some research with any number of departments on campus (microbiology, neuroscience, pharmacology, etc). However, they don't take as many out of state students.

Good luck with your choices!

Somehow 60,000 (or 50,000) a year in tuition just doesn't seem desirable.

The OOS tuition makes this a very silly school to even consider....unless money has no bearing. Which it should. :lame:

I thought that school is heavy on in-state preference

I understand that medical school debt is expected, so a mere difference in tuition was not going to hinder my choices. However, MSUCOM is an exception. According to the 2009 CIB, OOS tuition is $80,891, which is more than any MD or DO school. It's a great school, and I would love to apply here, but I would not go just because the tuition is too much for me. Also, it's cold up in Michigan.

How is Touro-NY? I know this is a brand new campus, but Touro's been around for some time. I'm applying here because it's in NYC, and I've spoken with a representative from Touro (Mare Island), and she was very friendly and informative.

Hey, I've been reading a lot of threads, and seem to encounter you on almost every thread with great bits of advice and humor. I'm actually applying to PCOM b/c of you (what you said in a different thread).

I just wanted to say thanks for being such a great contributor to SDN, I appreciate it along with the rest of the SDN group.👍

WesternU is a great choice, the weather is great! Has a strong match rate and faculty and students have a wonderful attitude about helping out students.

No problem, but I must know what thread you're talking about. 😀

When I was looking into MSUCOM they had an out of state scholarship that they give out quite generously that makes tuition managable, around 35,000 I think. Anyways, it would be around the same price as PCOM with that scholarship 😀. So all of you applying to MSUCOM from out of state should inquire about that and get it in the works before you go. Also, the military will pay any tuition (I think).

Adios!

Apply to PCOM, CCOM, DMU...and if u want throw in NOVA, NYCOM, Western, LECOM.

I had interviews at LECOM, CCOM, DMU, and NOVA...and picked CCOM..

Western fits this profile perfectly. They are established and a great school. Aside from that I would suggest AZCOM and NOVA depending on the emphasis you place on weather. There are other great schools such as LECOM-B (much lower tuition than the others) if you are into PBL. Those are the main schools that come to thought when you talk about good weather. If you prefer primary care ANY DO school would suit you just fine.
