Hi all! I'm a new poster, so forgive me if this question has been asked multiple times. I have taken plenty of science courses, but am just starting my Med School pre-reqs (chem, bio, physics, organic chem). So, I have two questions:

1. When schools require "two semesters of biology", is that usually an Intro Bio course + an upper level, or would classes like Anatomy and Physiology count towards that? I'm taking/ have taken all of these courses, but I'm just curious.

2. Would these classes count towards my sGPA? They seem like they should, considering they are Science classes, but the "BCPM" is throwing me off:
Anatomy + lab (BIO 129) - I got an A
Physiology + lab (BIO 141 + 142) - I got an A
Genetics (listed as BIO 133) - Currently taking
Microbiology + lab (listed as MICRB 106 + 107) - Currently taking
Nutrition (NUTR 251) - I got an A-
...so you can see why I would love for these to count towards my sGPA 😛

Whoops, let's make this three questions in case anyone feels ambitious enough to answer...
3. My freshman year at another university, I took a Gen Ed Math course (couldn't even tell you what it was called, the class was a joke). Will that factor into my sGPA or do only classes like Statistics and Calc count towards the sGPA?

Any feedback would be greatlyyyyy appreciated! 🙂 👍

The two semesters of biology are the two semesters of general biology. If there is only one, you took the wrong one. Anatomy does not count towards the requirement. Genetics and Microbiology do count however. Hope this helps OP!🙂

Generally it will be Bio I and Bio II, usually the first two biology courses that would be required for a biology major. If your university doesn't have two "general" biology courses, one intro plus one upper level may be acceptable, but you will want to contact med schools admissions offices and see what they say. Remember, each of these need to have a lab as well.

All of the above will, except for nutrition, which might. Read the AMCAS/AAMC guideline for courses, and see if the material taught in NUTR 251 fits the description. For example, I took a pharmacology course, which generally is considered non-BCMP. It was mainly focused on anatomy, cell biology and biochemistry, so I listed it as a Biology course, and my classification was accepted by AMCAS. As long as you can justify the classification, you can choose whether you want it to count as BCMP, and AMCAS will either accept it or change it. If they change it, you can appeal the decision with the course syllabus as evidence as to why you think it should be BCMP.

BCMP obviously stand for biology, chemistry, math, physics. If a course is under any of those departments, I wouldn't think twice about listing it as BCMP. All of the above are under Biology (even if microbio is a different department, it is a subset of biology, so definitely included.)

Was your gen ed math course a college level course, or a remedial course? If it was college level, it should count toward your sGPA. If remedial, you will have to check with the AMCAS instructions.

It was more of a gen ed math for people who hate math but it wasn't a remedial course.. It was taught by Dr. Paulos (not expecting anyone to recognize the name) but he was more into writing his books than teaching the class, from what I remember. But I digress, I don't have the actual transcript from my old school, but my new transcript lists it as a MATH course, so I am assuming it will be counted towards my sGPA then, am I correct?

It will, but I am also pretty sure you will have to get a transcript directly from the old school to submit to AMCAS. Even if all the courses transferred to your new school, I believe you still must submit the transcripts directly from each school you ever attended (post-high school of course).

All are BCPM except Nutrition. (correct me if wrong)

If you took courses in HS and got college credit for them you need to submit the transcript for the college/university that awarded the credits.

Quick questions: Do you have to list all BCPM courses for you sGPA? I mean if you already have 2 biology courses and labs are you forced to list all your other ones for your sGPA?

all bcpm will be calculated toward sgpa. you can try listing your other ones as another category, but i'm sure if it's something obviously b/c/p/m, then amcas will force you to correct it
