Hello everyone. From my previous thread I guess you know by now that I decided to switch to "dental" my senior year. Now I already have took the following bio course at a different college in the summer. Will I need to send the grade I got at the other school to the dental schools because it is not currently averaged into my GPA although I got an A- in the course... So anyway here is what the class I got credit for in my college.

"BIO 1005 General Biology - Structure and Function - A Human Orientation
2 lecture hours; 4 lab. hours; 4 credits"

There is also another class that is titled: "BIO 2010 Principles of Biology I
2 lecture hours; 1 recitation hour; 3 lab hours; 4.5 credits"

I did not take the above class and just want to know if I should take it, and "3001" which is the same but part II. So will I need to take both parts or can the one I took already be counted? There is a course that I can take which is lower then the 1005 I recieved credit for and that is:
"BIO 1003 Survey of the Living World
2 lecture hours; 4 lab. hours; 4 credits"

Now is it possible for me to take that 1003 class even though its lower in number than the one I already took? Techinically the y are both sort of an intro to bio, as opposed to bio I and II I stated above. Now in terms of dental school will it be okay to take this 1003 course along witht he 1005 I have to fullfill the bio req? Im really sorry for this long thread but I really need to know and we dont have a dental advisor in our college. Thanks so much for your help.

You can call the schools and see how they would assess the Bio 1003 course. You should definetly know for sure what kind of credit you will be receiving prior to taking this course. Good Luck!

IMHO, I do not think that the Bio 1003 course would be considered as a course that would fulfill the Bio prerequisite requirement. I think Bio 1005 is a Bio 1 but now you need something on a higher level, not lower. Good Luck!

Advice from SDN is really helpful, I've taken alot before from people here and applied it to my ultimate goal of getting into dental school, but don't you think contacting an advisor (though they really suck these days), or perhaps someone in the biology department at your school would be better? In all honesty, I'm not real sure, though I think principles 1/2 would be your best bet, maybe that first course was an intro course, and then schools always have bio classes for non biology/science majors...which tend to complicate things. I'd contact your school for the best possible advice. 👍

thanks guys I will contact them tomorrow ASAP. The problem is that Im not sure that they would know all this since it is basically a business school, with probably very few people interested in medicine.

Also another question. Since I will fullfill my BBA requirements at the end of the spring semester. After that can I simply go part-time and take 2 pre-reqs for dental school a semester including the summer one? Would that look bad on ym transcript when I apply to D-Schools because they might htink I was slacking off or it was easier for me to get a higher grade because of the few classes?

Also just in general what plan of action would you guys reccomend for me if I want to start dental school in 2006. Will I be able to make it by that time with only one bio class under my belt right now? Thank you soo much for your help. Everyone on this board is soo friendly, I hope thats how everyone is in dental school.

You should start studying for your DATs right about now. Do some volunteer work possibly over spring break or what not. You should take the DATs around April/May so that if you mess up the first time, you can still take them overby July/August. Also apply early like in May or June.

thanks for the advice, but how can I start studying for the DATs if I havent even taken any science classes except for bio? I mean I wont know anything right?

Also does any1 know if the Bio I took will count towards my pre-reqs even though it isnt technocally called Bio I even though we have a seperate course called BIO I? Thanks a lot everyone because this is very important to me. Im already behind like 2 years.

You aren't supposed to take random biology classes to fulfull your requirements. You are supposed to take one year of a series of biology classes. All science majors have a 3-4 (depending on the quarter or semester system) biology classes that follow in a series. Don't take non science major classes like "Intro to Bio" (nonscience major GE's). You need to take a specific series. Find out what your school requires for science majors and take those classes. Also do not take the DAT without taking Chemistry cause you might be lost. Take your chems and the bio you could learn with Kaplan.

The school catalog will most likely indicate which classes are for pre-med, pre-dental focus. Make sure it indicates "Biology for Majors". If the catalog indicates as pre-med, then this is the right course. Good luck!

BTW, you asked whether it's o.k. to start studying for the DAT w/o having taken the right courses? Of course!! In fact, if you study the DAT material, I can bet you that will help when you take the coursework.

oh man this could be a problem with the "series" of bio classes you are talking about. The one I took Im pretty sure is not for bio majors since its a general bio, and I took it because I just needed a scinece even though Im a business major...

Now the problem with me taking a "series bio class" is that under BIO I it says it is not open to students who have taken the general bio before it (the one I took). Is there any way around this? Will I be able to use the general bio I took towards my pre-reqs, or do I have to speak to the chair or something to let me take this "series" course even though I took the one before it?

Hey JohnDoeDDS,
To be honest with you, Im not sure about your school's policy but I know that anyone can take the bio series at UCLA if they start from the first class. It shouldn't be a problem. If I were you, I would go to a student counciling office and show them the list of pre dental classes you need. They will tell you what classes will fulfill the requirements. Also, you may want to ask the pre-med students what they take.

k thanks. Im gonna head over to school next week after new years' Also if I do take the series of the bio is it possible that I can just take bio II and have the general one I took count as bio I?
