Hi all,
I'm looking for advice from some current Pharm-D students about what classes that are not a pre-req. would be helpful in pharmacy school.
I'm definitely going to take fundamental biochemistry but my schedule will only allow me to either take microbiology or a couple of biotech classes; biomolecular seperation and advanved lab instrumentation. The biotech stuff sounds more interesting to me but if micro would be more helpful then i'll take that. People tell me that after taking bio 1 and 2, micro is mostly review at that point.

Already taken the PCAT; 94 composite. I have an interview at Midwestern Glendale next Friday; the only school I applied to and micro is not a pre-req. I guess I'll check the curriculum to see if they cover immunology.

Micro was not review from Bio I & II where I took it, but obviously ymmv. I also found the concepts to mesh well with the A&P series.

My micro teacher worked for the county as the infectious disease coordinator, so the hands-on / real life examples were pretty cool. Her experiments were nifty, too. I feel like that class is up in the top 3 for most applicable stuff learned, and I don't think she showed / taught us much unneccessary stuff. If I had to do it over again, I'd still take this class even though I don't need it. 👍

Way to go! 👍

I personally would still take micro. Like the above poster, I think it was one of the most useful and interesting courses I took as an undergrad.

If you're in the area, I can PM you the micro teacher's name if you want. She wasn't hard, just good. She doesn't use a textbook. You'll be in with a bunch of nursing students. Oh, I can give you the protip for parking if you decide to take it on Saturday.

I am in the area, taking classes at Glendale Community College right now. Does the micr teacher you have in mind teach at Phoenix College. If so, I have heard she's great, just don't remember her name, so a PM would be awesome.

+1 micro. It's not review, and is very applicable when you study infectious diseases.

For example. What's yeast vs. mold (and dimorpics)? Your empiric anti-fungal treatment would be VERY different between the 2, but most students don't know what's what.

Gram + vs Gram - organisms, motility, organisms that require nutrient enriched plates... all things will give you a big clue on what you are treating. It's very useful, and make you look good when the MD is wondering what's that coccobacillus in patient's sputum means, and you bring up haemophilus. 😛
