Hello-

As you guys know I am in the process of repairing my GPA. A lot of the classes where I screwed up when I started are the following: I have an F in 2 P.E. class, the other low grades are Cs, which are in Psych 1, Soc 1, Poli Sci 1, Beg. Algebra and College Algebra.

These classes are in no sense difficult, yet I was not ready for college as you can tell. I am not here for you guys to tell me that I am dumb for obtaining such grades or that I wont make it in the medical field; as I said I was not ready for school at the time, and many issues surrounding my life made it worse.

I simply want to know which classes I should retake, if any to bring those Cs to As, what would you guys do in such a case?

Thanks in advance,

Eduardo

Talk with someone in academic affairs. At my school you can't make up C's, you can only make up D,F, and W grades.. Also maybe someone can help but I think AAMC uses all the grades not just the made up grade?? But I have no idea about the 2nd part..

Your course of action depends on your overall GPA and how many credit hours you already have.

If your GPA isn't terrible (still, say, 2.8+), and/or you still have a reasonably low number of credit hours, go ahead and just retake the F's; since AMCAS will just average your old grade with your new one, it hardly makes sense to retake a class all over again just to raise your grade from a C to a B, and it just shows that you can get an A in a class if you get twice as much time to master it as everyone else. If the C's were in science classes, take a higher level class and get an A to show them that you're capable of handling hard sciences classes the first time around.

If your GPA is very low and/or you have a lot of credit hours, then just start retaking as many of your old classes as possible where you got less than a B and plan on applying to DO schools. AACOMAS (the DO application service) replaces your old grade with your new one, so you can raise your GPA a lot faster and in some cases can raise it up to a level where you're competitive for a DO school when your GPA might be beyond repair as far as AMCAS goes.

I have around 110-116 semester units and the gpa is around 2.5 🙁

I would sit down and figure out what your GPA will be if you retake the classes and finish your program. In the case of retakes, AMCAS averages both grades, while the DO app service only uses the retake grade. If your GPA doesn't cross a 3.0 with the retakes, I would suggest just finishing the program, and going to some kind of masters program. I think if you retake (assuming GPA doesn't cross 3.0) you will be screened out based on GPA. Also, schools do realize upward trends. So lets say first year went pretty bad, but there was gradual improvement, schools will def consider that.

OK, so the total amount of units I have is 156.6 semester units and gpa is 2.5. What would be the best course of action?

Thanks,

Ed

As other posters said, you must check with your school to see what they will allow you to retake - at my school you cannot retake a class you passed (although you could always take the same class at another school or a CC). Then, retake whatever classes that are allowed and that you have time/money for. I would strongly suggest applying DO as these retake grades will replace the old grades. Good luck!
