I'm kinda in a dilemma over choosing between at deciding on where to- Stony Brook vs Binghamton. I know both schools are great schools in the SUNY system. I plan on majoring in Biology and hope to later apply to dental school. I want to which one would better prepare me for dental school. Whereever I go i know I will do my best but I want to know where i would have better opportunities to prepare myself. Such things include professors, are there research opportunities, shadowing/volunteering opportunities and if they have a predental club/society. Whereever i go i want to maintain atleast 3.5-3.6 gpa. Which school would have committed teachers and students who are willing to help me get into dental school???

Honestly I think both will provide similar opportunities, I think it's more about what you put into the whole undergrad process that's important.

You might consider searching this forum for info on stony brook (more likely to get a few hits than bing). Other than that you should consider location, as they are very different, if that's important to you at all. I'm not sure if it matters, but attending Stony Brook as an undergrad might help in applying to their dental school as well, but that's pure speculation on my part.

Location and cost are two very important factors. If they cost the same, go to the one with better weather. If they are the same in every respect, go to the one with a better reputation. In the end, get a high GPA and kill the DAT and you'll be fine 🙂

If you're just going into undergrad... go to whatever school you like better. It makes little difference which undergrad school you went to, just as long as you do really well in whatever environment/school you choose.

The only thing that I can think of is that Stonybrook has a dental school attached to the university, whereas Binghamton doesn't. This means that if you wanted to, you could possibly get involved with research at the dental school at Stonybrook, but the opportunity wouldn't be there at Binghamton.

It's not a huge difference, but I know a few people who have done research at the dental school that's part of their university. I don't think it makes any difference whether you do research at the dental school or not, but some people want to do this, so I felt like it was worth mentioning.

Other than that, it really doesn't matter where you get your undergraduate degree. What matters is how you take advantage of the environment you're in. Go wherever you will be happier.

i personally know a few students that go to both stony brook and binghamton. from what i have heard, binghamton will provide an overall better experience. as for dental school admissions, i have heard that 4 students from binghamton were admitted to stony dental last year ( thats alot.haha). stony brook has a great science curriculum, but it lacks a social life. It is a big commuter school. Over 50% of students go home on the weekends ( many students have family nearby, but still live on campus). I know binghamton has a pre-dental club, i am not sure about Stony Brook.
You will be able to gain admissions with equal chance ( relative to school reputation and preparation) from both schools. I believe Stony Brook and Binghamton are the best suny's in NY state. They are both very challenging, and have competitive programs.

Both are very reputable, no adcom will give preference to one over they other. focus on your pre-reqs, but remember all the other classes affect your gpa the same amount. If I could go back to being a senior in highschool I would be studying for gen chem right now and absolutely destroy the course! haha. for dental school, stony brook and buff will def like to see you did well at another SUNY school. just try your hardest wherever you choose. find a good community service club to join the first week of school.
