Which colleges are better for OMM/OPP?

What are folks' views on which colleges are better for osteopathic manipulative medicine (skills, science, primary care, hours, etc.), and which emphasise osteopathic principles and practice?

How important was this in your decision to enrol in your college?

I dont think I understand your question but I'll give it a shot.
We have it all here at DMU. Great OMM faculty, Dr. Boesler is the best! We have a 1:1 ratio of TA's to OMM table so we really learn our stuff. OPP is usually stressed during the OMM lectures and we get it here and their during our Basic Sciences.


The main reason that I chose DMU is becase they will give me a great education as well as not pushing me into primary care and giving me oppertunites to explore any field that I want.

From what I've heard KCOM is pretty gung ho about omt.

Pikeville- I truly believe we are one the cutting edge in OMT. The results we get are truly impressive.... Plus, we also learn every method in use from the guy who learnt from Laughlin (A.T.'s grandson and founder of muscle energy) and helped to dev. functional with Mitchel. I know that we are ahead of many of the schools in the profession...being I'm a MSI and I can treat the whole body with muscle energy and by the end of the year I'll be able to use functional.

I'm in the KCOM DO/MS program. I haven't started the OMM classes yet, but from my understanding KCOM requires a lot of hours in the OMM lab compared to some of the other DO schools.

i find it odd that KCOM doesn't start OMM right away . . . what is their reasoning for that?
I love LECOM but i have some issues with the way OMM is handled here- most of us do. its sort of disorganized and subjective and concepts aren't really taught as well as they should be . . .

KCOM DOES start OMM in the first DO year.

From what I understand, the combined DO/MS program is 5 years and the first year is an MS year.

DMU consistently scores much higher than the national average on the OMM section of the COMLEX. Dr. Boesler is amazing here, and as DocGeorge said, we get a lot of personal attention, and people take OMM pretty seriously here. Big Up to the DMU OMM dept.

Here at VCOM, there's a pretty aggressive OMT program. For instance, this block there's ~60hours of PPC/OMT lecture and lab in a 9 week block.

We've got Dr. DeFeo who is really outstanding leading this--of course, the other doc's are good too ;-)

Seriously, it's not just the students that are interested in OMT but the faculty at-large is also very enthusiastic about OMT.

I hope you can tell, Corey, that you will NOT get a straight unbiased answer to your original question. Everyone will say their school is the best... why? Because that's what the school promises their students, and they cannot compare their OMM experience to any other school's.

I think NSUCOM's OMM Dept is top notch, btw.

still, the feedback is rather interesting. i'm glad to hear so many a so enthusiastic about OMM.

maybe my query should be in reverse: are there any schools that have practically relegated OMM to the periphery of osteopathic clinical work?

Not LECOM...they're having big problems with OMM, so much so that the department has to change things, or the dean/curriculum committee will change it for them. If you're big on OMM, I'd recommend elsewhere. It's very disorganized here.

Same with TCOM. OMM is not heavily emphasized here. This might be because we are part of the Texas state system, which is heavily governed by MDs. The vast majority of our grads go into allopathic residencies. From what I've heard, KCOM is tops. All of our OMM profs are alums of the Kirkesville school. If you're interested in specializing in manip, or want to make it an integral part of your FP practice, I would put it high on your list of schools.
