i like stedmans but have never really used anyhting else to compare

I use Taber's Encyclopedic Med Dictionary. Probably, the best one out there, imo. Plus it's pretty compact so it's not a b1tch to lug around everywhere 😛

They'll all serve you fine. Get the one with the best price and easiest to carry with you when you study. Stedman's Concise is a solid choice. A few months in the year, you won't be using it as much anyway.

I like Stedman's. When I bought it it came with a CD. Since most of my studying was done at my desk with a computer it was very convenient to keep the dictionary window open and look things up that way. Now I usually use Dorland's on my Palm, I don't like it as much as Stedman's but it works fine for when I want to quickly look something up on the wards. I haven't looked at Taber's but it is marketed as a dictionary for nurses and allied health professionals, so it may or may not have what a med student needs. If possible, go to a bookstore with a few terms in mind and compare the definitions in each of the dictionaries to see what will suit you best.

I think the best way to decide is just to sit down with the 3 big ones (Stedman's, Dorland's, and Mosby). But I will give you my preference.

MOSBY all the way. First Dorland's is clearly inferior and harder to read than Stedman's so that is gone. Mosby has several advantages over Stedman's.

Mosby is cheaper (by quite a bit)
Mosby is easier to read
Mosby is a better made book (holds up better)
Mosby has pictures, good ones in color and lots of them
Mosby has everything you can find in Stedman's.

One note. There are two editions of Mosby's. One is red and one is blue. I believe the blue one has about 100 more pages (mostly reference stuff) and only costs about 4 bucks more. Definitiely get that edition.

I spent some time with all three and when done, even though Mosby was not one of the ones listed on our syllabus, myself and most of my friends opted for it anyways. Very good book.
