Sheik-sha-mash,

I just wanted to know from people who have visited, goto, or interviewed at DO schools across the country whether the one they visited had a prayer/meditation/silent/faith room for students wanting to pray or meditate?

The reason I ask is this is an important factor for the school I choose since I want to be able to meditate when I'm at school.

The schools I'm particularly interested in right now are LECOM (Erie), MSUCOM, PCOM, NYCOM, and CCOM. Do any one of those schools have one?

Interesting question. I doubt you will find that any of these schools have designated prayer areas as none have any religious affiliation. It is possible that the student government/student council has arranged something. I am sure you will be able to find a place to pray during the day while you are at school. Perhaps speak to people in the library or deans office and see if there are quiet conference rooms that are available at certain times.

I know of students at PCOM that pray during the day at school. I will talk to them and see if there is something set up or of they just go to a random room that is vacant. As JP stated, the schools do not have religious affiliations and most likely do not have "prayer/meditation" areas for the numerous religious faiths.

Does anyone know if TCOM has something like this?

No, we do not have a dedicated space. But, you can reserve a conference and/or study room in the library. I think the Catholic organization does this.

Sorry I must ask this --> Why does it matter? Pray at home in private or at a Mosque/church/or a synagogue. Even if you need to pray five times a day, there are rules for that making it more flexible w/in the religion, no?

Otherwise Linda Loma is the only school I can think of that would have such a place and it is an MD school; I believe it is a protestant school, but I may be wrong on that.

For my particular faith, there's no rule about praying so many times per day or anything like that. However, I do like the sense of peace I get from prayer and meditation, and rooms that are designed specifically for that purpose always have a special "feel" for me. I don't know how to describe it any better than that. It would be nice if my future school had a room for that purpose; I could definitely see myself using it during the day as needed. But if there's not a designated room, any quiet (or not even necessarily quiet) place will work.

And hyperbaric...oh, I'm so jealous! TCOM is my top choice, hands down. Lucky, lucky you.

I see your point. I like taking casual walks around the parks at my campus, which isn't prayer, but nonetheless relaxing and soothing.

KCUMB has a little chapel area in the admin building.

You don't have to say sorry, but with regards to the flexibility. Yes there is to an extent. I mean for Muslims they have to pray 5 times a day, but not at exact times of the day (hence not very strict) but during the prescribed time periods. And sometimes when you're in the middle of studying in the library its a lot easier to just goto a room thats 5 mins away and pray for the 5-15 mins u need, then to say walk or drive all the way home.

It's simply a matter of practicality and convenience really....at least for me.

I totally agree.. it's really a matter or convenience like canadianpremed said...Sometimes you only get a 10-15 min break and you cant exactly drive to a mosque/church/synagogue....

I'm muslim and I like to pray all 5 prayers..... At University of Florida, my undergrad school... there was no "assigned" medidation/prayer room, but the muslim organization on campus reserved one room pretty much for the entire year....so that sort of served as our unofficial prayer room.... It's just nice to have somewhere to go pray/meditate if you choose.

Currently I work at a local hospital and there is a medidation/prayer room...I didnt find about this room until 2 months after i started working at the hospital...Before I used to go outside the hospital and pray on the grass... the ants made it really uncomfortable! And then I found out about the prayer/meditation room. Things have been sooooooo much easier since then 🙂

It's not a requirement for me that the school that I choose must have a prayer/meditation room... but it sure would be nice....
