Hi all!

Wanting some advice on which job to take. I'm currently a senior and for my whole undergraduate career, I have only wanted to take 1 gap year. For context, I am a ORM female, first-gen, GPA 3.93, MCAT 518. I have done over 3000+ years in research and around 400+ clinical hours. It has been easier for me to get into lab because I wanted to fulfill a senior thesis in my biology major. I've done a lot of wet lab, and honestly, I'm done with it. I've always wanted to go into the Reproductive Endocrinology (doing IVF/IUIs for patients), and I know that down the line after residency, it will only get more competitive. Right now I have three options for jobs and I wanted people's opinions on what would probably be better for me overall.

Job #1:
CRC at Cardiology Lab
Pro: 1 Gap Year, chill work environment, at my T20 University (cheaper cost of living + more of my premed friends are here), shadowed here, and not super hands-on
Con: Not interested in Cardiology

Job #2
CRC at Reproductive Endocrinology Lab
Pro: In the specialty I am super interested in, could get connections, at my T20 University (cheaper cost of living + more of my premed friends are here), learn phlebotomy
Con: Two Gap Years (not in my original plan of 1 gap year)

Job #3
MA at IVF Clinic
Pro: Hands-on clinical experience, working closely with the doctors, 1 gap year, in NYC (new city, sister and cousin live here, but less close friends are here)
Con: High cost of living, seems more labor intensive than a CRC job, moving to a new city may also be challenging to navigate while also writing med school apps, not at a prestigious university

So anyway! I was wondering if anyone had any insights in the REI field. As a first-gen doctor in the fam, I don't really have a lot of connections in general. I was thinking that if I worked in an environment where I was surrounded by doctors in the field I would want to go in, it would be better for me the long run. But also, then I would have to take another gap year.

IMO #1. You have a great app and shouldn’t delay your app another year.

Connections are good but the most important thing for you right now is just getting into medical school. If you can, shadow with the specialty you are interested in while you are in your gap year.

Yes, the job is not in your desired specialty but that’s okay. You said it’s chill which is SUPER important during application cycle (writing, interviews, etc). A boring, chill job that is supportive of your goals >>> busy clinic with no spare time

Edit: stay with the low cost option because app cycle is expensive! Plus you’ll have more cash on hand to travel and buy stuff for med school. If you want to live somewhere else, apply to schools OOS

I post this in jest. 🙂

I have done over 3000+ years in research and around 400+ clinical hours.
