Which Netter to buy?

i know there are many different netters anatomy books (regular version, professional version, etc.) ....which do most pod students prefer? Do they really differ? Is an older version the same as the newer versions?

I prefer this Atlas myself, but I have heard a few professors scoff at mistakes in Netters and recommed Grants over Netters. I personally think that Grants pictures lack detail. Netters did just great for me and the 4th edition should prepare you to rock and roll. Hope that helps some.

From my experience at Scholl. i would go for rohen or grants atlas (its my personal preference nothing official). Rohen has real images which are very helpfull when you study for the lab practical exams.

I agree with cool_vkb as far as the Rohen being stellar when studying for lab exams however I feel the Netter is a good complement to the Rohen. For Clinical Anatomy the Netter was an excellent resource and was also useful for Lab exams but only in the sense that it is a 'cleaner' and more defined representation of what you should be looking for in the cadaver. The Rohen was a useful guide when it came to actually helping to locate specifics in the cadaver itself. Rohen is also extremely useful when the profs close down the lab 1 or 2 nights before the lab exam to tag the cadavers... it's the next best thing to actually being in the lab yourself (along with Dissector if you're at Scholl).

Last year I used the 4th ed Netter and thought it was great... bought it from Amazon instead of the bookstore and saved a load. 👍

Netter's plates as well as the anatomy depts own images that the profs have made throughout their years is what's on the flat screens that you can look at while you're dissecting. I would say Netter's plus Rohen's is what >90% of people (DO's, DPM's and DPT's) use during 1st year here at DMU. If you just go up to the book store, the ladies there will hook you up w/ everything you need. I would go see which version of Netter's is up there and then go look online or talk to 2nd/3rd years to see if you can get a cheaper version.

Does it matter what year Rohen or Netter we buy? I was looking at Amazon, and the 2006 edition of Rohen is $50, but the 2002 edition is $15. Also, I have the 3rd edition of Netter, b/c I used it for anatomy in college (they should only make minor changes from edition to edition right?).

Netter is the best if you are only going to have one atlas for gross and LEA. If you buy a second, I'd get one with cadaver pics as was suggested above... Rohen is a good one for gross anat pics.

For lower extremity anatomy, you probably want a bit more detail than will be in the general atlases. Netter is still perfectly adequate for LEA if you supplement it with your course notes/pics. Thieme Musculoskeletal is a nice one IMO... good pics as well as Xrays, pathology, and clinical correlates (angles, etc) written in.

Frank Netter has been dead for about 15 years now, so the oil paintings are all exactly the same.

I own the 2nd and 3rd editions, and I've seen the 4th edition as well since some of the students I TA'd for used it. They add a couple of new things, but overall nothing changes. However, it seems to me that the color quality of the newest edition is better than the 2nd.

I barely used my netter last year; I bought it because the 2nd years had recommended it. It was great for upper extremity, but otherwise I could have gotten away with the Grant's that I already owned. I love the Rohen for labs and I have a McMinn's Foot and Ankle that is great for LE osteology. I also have a Moore's Clinical Anatomy...the charts are nice.

If I didn't already own about 5 atlases, I would get the new Thieme. It's awesome. I really had to fight the urge to buy it. I know one student who even took the LE section out and had it bound because it's such a nice resource.

Don't forget that your school library will also have copies of these other titles. You will be fine with any Netter and you can always check out a different resource from the library!

Look...why not use the library? I haven't bought netter or grant because they are in the library. The info doesnt change...the pages and pictures just get brighter the newer the edition. But maybe I am just cheap. Also, the only place I can study is the library. If I go home...I get nothing done.

i ended up getting a great deal through an organization at school. $60 got you membership, a new netters, scrub bottoms, and obviously free luncheons throughout the year! First lunch is tomorrow! 😀

Cool... good clubs are important. I'd tell the club officers you appreciate their hard work.

The ppl running the clubs are volunteering their time/effort to provide good experiences and help to the underclassmen learn and network. Yes, the club officers will get "club X" on their CV, but that is something just about everybody has by graduation anyways. It's mostly a labor of love to help your future colleagues; you will quickly realize that if you run a club or help out with one when you become an upperclassmen.

GL in classes... never let your Netter get dusty 😀
