So, I'm thinking about buying a motorcycle once the semester starts. I have a few bikes in mind, so tell me which one I should get. (I'm relatively a n00b when it comes to motorcycles.)

Suzuki GXSR 1000

That first one, Suzuki GXSR 1000, is wicked LOL 😀

Black is sexy. Red is naughty.

Any further questions?

you realize that the way you claim you drive a car you're going to kill yourself, and hopefully no one else in the process.

Those people just turn into signs that stick up by the side of the road. 😱

Motorcycle wise, I'd definitely be more cautious because generally speaking, the car drivers around here don't constantly check their mirrors. The amount of times I've seen some grandmamobile going 45 mph veer into the left lane right as a motorcycle was about to pass.

Main reason I wanna get a motorcycle is because I've gotten sick of the bumper to bumper traffic during the morning commute, and its getting annoying with the manual transmission. If I get a motorcycle I can lane filter between the stopped cars, probably shave a good half hour off the commute.

Problem with public transportation isn't really getting to school, the problem is getting back home because the trains heading back to Long Island are virtually non-existant around 12AM-2AM.

Right, you get a vehicle that can clear 150mph in a few seconds so you can be more cautious.

Get a Harley.

I thought lane splitting was only legal in California?

for someone like you sparda, a motorcycle is a death sentence.

Get the CBR. Not because of the color or anything, but because it's one hell of a bike....

I thought only rich people drive in NYC? Isn't the subway faster plus you can study on it.

You shouldn't get a 1000cc bike then.

How much does the rider's weight play into how much power you should go with?

Oh yeah, the motorcycle's lack of barriers to prevent someone falling or getting thrown should keep me from doing anything crazy.

Lane splitting in NYC, I'm not sure if it's legal, I just know that almost all bikers do it, and the police don't enforce it. (Police don't consider it worth it to chase bikers, almost impossible to catch them unless you're willing to spend money to put up a spy in the sky (helicopter).

Only rich people drive in NYC? Nah. If you can find metered parking, you'll be fine. As of the gas prices right now, it's cheaper for me to drive into the city than take public transport. The commute works out to be about the same, door-to-door because I still need to drive to the LIRR station and arrive there like 20 minutes before the trains arrive, find parking, pick up a sandwich and coffee, board the train.

I don't go home until 11PM-2AM during the school year, so my drive home is about 15 minutes. I study at a hookah bar in Astoria, so for public transport, I'd have to walk the 1/2 mile to the subway, wait for the local subway, get to the LIRR station in Jamaica, wait for that train, then take a local train out into Long Island, get my car, and drive home. If I head out at 2AM, I won't be home until 4AM if I'm using public transport.

1) You're wrong. You *will* be tempted to speed. Rationalize it however you want. All you talk about is speeding and evading cops. The only way you might stop is when you get so many tickets that your license is taken away and you're threatened with jailtime (which is what happened to a friend of mine...finally made him slow down).

By the way....I *literally* watched a biker die in front of my eyes....32 yo guy (as per the news the next day), had his whole life ahead of him...I saw the entire accident....him get tossed in the air, and bleed to his death in front of a Harvey's. Ain't pretty.

2) Police don't chase bikers? What ?!??!?!? They do have these things called radios, fyi. Your mere attitude here reflects that you plan on being reckless with your new bike (even if you only know it subconsciously).

Most police departments have a policy of not chasing bikers because it's too much of a risk, it's much easier to chase cars. No police car can outmaneuver a bike with an experienced rider. Any chase of a biker will likely result in the police car crashing or the biker getting killed, therefore they won't risk it.

One of my friends did 170 past a cop, he saw the cops put his lights on, and then the cop turned them off. So, he pulled over like a bit later and waits for the cop, the cop then turns his lights on, pulls in, and tells him that he'll let him go since he actually stopped.

The reason I speed in a car is because is because of the protection that you have in a car, you don't have that in a bike, therefore I'd be less tempted to swerve in and out of traffic. But if the road is clear and straight, I would speed, not so much in the city, there's better places out in Long Island to speed, like down by the beaches, and I think they have some tracks way out east.

BTW, the closest I've ever been to crashing was when some drunk guy decided to cut across my lane in a snowstorm because he didn't think about getting to his exit ahead of time (he ended up hitting the cushion barrier), I momentarily lost control and had to use CPR to regain traction.

Oddly enough, I've been considering a bike also, but I just don't care enough.

Why not look into an R1? That's such a sexy bike... and probably every bit as fast as those up there...

Enough power for what?

Seriously, for commuting you could probably get away with a 250cc Honda. Too much bike will get you killed.

You would probably be better served if you asked this on a motorcycle forum. I'd bet there's even a Long Island specific group out there!

if you have never rode a bike there is no way that you will be able to handle a 1000cc bike. You mine as well check organ donor on the back of your drivers license. you will outgun any reasonable car with a 600cc but if you are noob should be on no more then a 250...

btw, honda ftw

Planning on parking it inside the lobby of the school or right in front of the lobby where the security guards hang out.

I'm confused. You just recently bought a brand new CC. Now you're saying you hate bumper to bumper traffic and are going to drop at least 10k on a new bike. Seems to me like you are spending as if you have already graduated.

I'm leasing the CC, I didn't think I'd like the car this much, so I'll buy it out when the lease expires, in 2012, right around the time I graduate. I'm hating the bumper to bumper traffic because the automatic transmission drivers expect you to move every time traffic moves (I like to let the car in front of me get about 50 feet (3 car lengths) ahead of me before I start moving).

I've managed to save some money enough to put a down payment on the bike. The monthly payments would likely be funded by the student loan refund.

Paying debt with debt is usually not a good idea.

you know you have to shift gears on a bike right?

That won't fly. My little moped thingy got arrested and thrown into the back of a cop's car outside the library the first day that I had brought it with me to school.

I watched anonymously and silently as they took my tiny, little moped and then chewed out the officers later on whenever I went to claim it. 😡

I think what made me so angry was that the cop had made a huge spectacle out of it and had the gall to drive his cop car through the heart of campus in the middle of the day to confiscate a tee-tiny, little moped. Loser... 👎

Sorry I didn't take the time to read all of the responses because my opinion was made up from the original post. If you are a "nOOb" rider, my answer is none of the above...For my first bike, i got a nice looking 1991 Suzuki GS500e on craigslist for 900 dollars. It had some dents and scratches in it, but guess what, if this is your first bike, YOU'RE GOING TO DROP IT. I say that with 100% confidence. I kept the bike for 2 years, learned to ride, couldn't care less when i dropped it, then turned around and sold it for 1200 on craigslist.

Theres my advice...

I know I'll drop it definitely. You're making it sound like the paint is cheap and will get ****ed up from just one drop though. (Assuming you're talking low speed.)

And I know I'll have to shift gears on a bike, I know it won't be as often because I can either lane filter through the stopped traffic, or I'll stick to the local roads until I reach a point where the highway traffic eases up.

After spending the better part if this month in the surgical ICU, I can tell you with 100% confidence that there's no way in hades I'll get a motorcycle.
Probably around 50% of our pts are motorcycle crashes and they are MESSED up. Seriously, quadraplegia and degloving injuries aren't worth a joy ride.

It's not a matter if cheap paint. Dropping a bike while standing still will eff it up.

You'll see.

The one time I dropped my jixter 1100 cost me about $400 just for one turn signal. If you dont have the skid protectors, you will definately get some scratches in the paint. And being a newb, you will drop it, im sure more than once. I sold mine because I continued to do stupid **** on it, and could foresee myself doing my last stupid thing on it. But if youre hard set on getting a bike, I would say VCU has the best advice; get something cheap and feel free to **** it up. Personally, if youre a pharmacy student and have this much money just lying around, invest it somewhere else and on something worthwhile.

multiple people have made this point...he can't say he wasn't warned...

nice knowing you sparda

I prefer rollercoasters.
I know there's less control doing that vs riding a motorcycle, but the feeling of acceleration is pretty similar, AND I highly doubt you'd ever end up in the ICU over it.

Sparda, what about rock climbing, kayaking, sky diving or something like that?

I'm just trying to think of alternatives to the ICU...

Rollercoasters have gotten old for me. I've been on everything at Great Adventure, and I really wanna go to Cedar Point and check out that thing called Millenium Force. Although I'm sure nothing is better than El Toro at Six Flags Great Adventure in NJ. I'm thinking about going on a base jump or skydiving. Yes, I know that base jumping is probably the most dangerous out of the activities. What can I say, I'm a life insurance companies worst nightmare.

and a cemetery plot dealer's dream? you don't have to live like a mother would wish you to, but be smart as well...

I honestly don't care what you do to put yourself in harms way. Go jump off a damn cliff.

But getting on a motorcycle and/or car and driving like a jackass involves others too. I don't care how much "protection" you have in a car...you're going to kill someone else. And you're being a negligent macho bastard.

Wooo...sorry, I had to get that off my chest. Just hoping something wakes you up sooner rather than later.

I've never heard of base jumping until now.
I think I'd wanna puke right after jumping, but then I'd probably get used to it after that.

I hope it's a clean video... The sound isn't hooked-up on my computer. 😳
