the following compounds are dissolved in water. Which one would produce an acidic solution?

a. NH3
b. CaCO3
c. CO2
d. CH2OH
e. none of above

I say "none of above", but the correct answer is CO2. How can you deduce to this answer? Thanks! CO2 doesn't have any H+ or lone e pair to be donate to base. How can it produce acidic solution? thanks!

is it somthing we need to memorize? or is there a way to think about it?

b/c NH3 + H2O --> NH4+ + OH- would make acid too (i.e. NH4+) so choice a correct too.

I think water is not that strong of an acid to donate H+. remember [H+]=10(-7) at pH 7.
