anyone know which programs are known for accepting D.O.'s on a regular basis. Especially programs in these states:
Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Georgia
Thanks in advance for your help!

You should be ok at almost all programs if you have good board (usmle) scores. dont just limit yourself in that manner.

after interviewing at alot of places on the east coast and meeting many DOs along the trail, both interviewing and residents, I can tell u that it is a non-issue. the USMLE is not a necessity but will help land more interviews at some "big name" programs. I can tell you that there has never been a DO at MGH or cornell and probably never will be .... no big deal there are plenty of programs out there. i think cali might be tough to get casue of the sunny weather but im not sure...

not entirely true above:

a few years ago about three people from NYCOM all got harvard anesthesia, i think MGH, but they were all stellar candidates.................good usmle scores. These days though i doubt it...........................

as for cornell /columbia............ive been told even in the down years they would leave spots open instead of taking DOs.

Ah............the hell with those arrogant bastards anyway.

ecf1975do, not entirely true. At the resident component meeting of the ASA in San Franscisco, I met a DO from MGH. Wanted to become president of the resident component but tried to kiss ass too much and it backfired.

I met a guy with 220 boards at Columbia from a DO school. He had interviews at other places, MGH included, although he felt that Cornell didn't want him because he's a DO. It can be done.

Good luck.

Just go to the program's websites and see the lists of current residents.........

All I have to say is, there is always a first. If you are a competitive student, go for it. Most off the time when you hear that a school doesn't accept a DO, it is through rumor and word of mouth. That person most likely didn't go up to the review board and ask them if they would accept a DO. Think about it, if you had to choose btwn a DO w/ 250 on USMLE, great rec letters, publications, ect... compared to a MD w/ a 215, and ok letters, who would you choose (and vice versa). Come on, only ingnorance chooses the less qualified person.

How about the anesthesia programs in Cali? Do they take many DOs? Require USMLE?

I don't know about Cali, but if I were a DO trying to match in anesthesia I would definitely take USMLE step I and II. It might be a pain in the ass but it's probably well worth it. Search this forum for info.

Residencies in Cali generally are more competetive because of location--everyone loves sunny southern california. I don't know what UCLAs track record is a far as DOs, but USCs program has taken DOs in the past (so I'm told by an anesthesiologist from USC) but also there is an osteopathic residency in anesthesia at Riveside County Hospital. It is VERY competetive. It is the only DO anesthesia residency in the western US. Also, I understand UC Davis to be a very DO friendly program as well. I don't know too much about the other programs out here.
