i am going to apply to DO schools but i don't know which schools to apply.
is there any ranking of DO schools or any factors that i should consider before choosing schools?
thank you.

The only rankings I am aware of are the US News Graduate school rankings. I think only 3 or 4 DO schools rank in Primary Care and Rural Med. I am going to OSU-COM and it ranked 47 in PC and 20 in RM. These ranking contain DO and MD schools.

I would not consider these rankings very highly when trying to decide where to go to school. You need to research each school and look at tuition, location, and student response. Go where you feel like you have the best chance of doing well. I am an OK resident so my tuition is only 10k. I also applied to Touro, Des Moines, KCOM, and CCOM. These schools were much more expensive for me ( some were in the 30-40K range).

Good luck,
Luke

This is just my opinion....
PCOM and MSUCOM have the reputation for haveing the best academics...NYCOM has the reputation of having the best hospital affiliates to do clerkships in. NYCOM also has a higher % of students going into speciality fields.
I just graduated this year from NYCOM and I can telll you this, my classmates did great in the match, both allopathic and osteopathic an we kicked butt in the competitive fields....10 Surgery (5 allo,5 osteo), 18 ER (12 osteo, 6 allo), ?5 or 6 Radiology(3 allo/2-3 osteo), 6Neurology (6allo), 1 optho(ALLO), 1 Urology(ALLO),....this is off the top of my head, but as you can see we kicked butt.
Here is my advice, you should check into as many schools as possible, because no matter how great the school is, if you hate the school, you will be going into a tough 4 years with a strike against you. Good luck....pm me if u have more questions

Thank you guys for the information. It helped me alot. I am gonna start to check out schools.

I am also wondering that those specialties(surgeory, radiology,,etc)in DO use same method as MD to treat patient or are they also using the theory of osteopathic medicine.
cause I heard that DO's have hard time to find the fellowship compare to MD. I think MD look down on DO. but i really love the theory of OM.

thank you..

I think you should look at each schools website and evaluate each curriculum. I am from Kansas and I applied to DMU, OSU, Kirksville,UHS and a few others. I will be attending UHS this fall. I chose this school for a few reasons. First, it is just across the Missouri border, so very close to home. Second, my hometown DO went there and he told me all about the school. Third, after my interview, I fell in love with the school: the students, faculty, curriculum, etc. Finally, it is the only school I gained acceptance to, but if I had to choose between any of the schools, I would go with UHS!

There is my sales pitch!

mddo2be--Love your quote. The House of God is one of my favorite books!!!

I agree with all the above post.
I'm from Oklahoma and I only applied to One med School.

Well I guess it depends...I am going into surgery. The treatment for a hot appendix is the same whether the doc is an MD or DO. However I feel that trained as a DO i have weapons in my arsenal not available to my MD collegues(ie...lymphatics are great in some post-op pt's)
As far as fellowships, if u are good and do well on the inservice you will get a good fellowship whether DO and MD...and we also have the option of applying for DO fellowships.
As far as MD's looking down on us, I personally have not seen this. The best advice I got on this subject came a a 2nd year surgery resident (who was an allopath). He told me that when I get into residency I should wear my ID badge with my title (DO) proudly. If you are good thats all people care about, and if u r good people will equate your work with your training....this way misconceptions can be remidied. It made perfect sence to me.
Hope this helps
