Which dental schools do not rank? I hear most of them do, but at some top ones, because they feel everyone works at the same level, a simple Pass/Fail system is acknowledged. I was wondering what schools DO NOT rank because it sort of alleviates the pressure to try to be in the top 5 off your class (though not necessary, but would help a lot) in order to specialize in a great residency.

Thank you.

From my understanding it does not alleviate the pressure. There are many other things people gun for to make them stand out for specialties.

Two schools I know are Uconn and Harvard.

I think I remember hearing that UCLA doesnt rank either...but I'm not 100% on that one.

I am sure that uconn and columbia use pass/fail, and I think harvard as well

columbia is P/F/H which makes a huge huge difference. class is ranked in quintiles

A huge difference in a good or a bad way? Is there still competition to get an H over a P to influence which quintile you fall into? To me this system sounds like "H/P/F, get ranked behind your back."

USC does not rank. Although, OKU (Omicron Kappa Upsilon) honor roll comes out once a year and students are placed on it for being in the top 10% of each dental class. So, maybe a pseudo-ranking system...

Penn only ranks the top 10 students per class.

Not that I'm saying this is the case anywhere, but my father went to Columbia Medical School. They were allegedly pass/fail with no ranks. When it came time for honor societies and residencies in the fourth year, they told them that they had been secretly keeping grades and thus, ranks. I wonder if this happens anywhere now...

well, it does increase competition for those who wants to get in specialty programs. i believe ranking is done by the number of honors you get, but nobody knows for sure what really goes on behind the scenes. there have been rumors of a high-pass low-pass policy...but it's only rumors. transcript just shows Pass or Honor

Lol, which means everyone is ranked. You're either "Top 10" or "Dregs of society."

Not quite.......i heard that this yr 10 out of 11 who applied to ortho got matched and not one of them was in the top 10. Being in the top 10 gets you some award or something here.

That doesn't mean that the rankings aren't taken into account, I'm sure the people that matched I general had fantastic boards scores.

Tufts is p/f/h, i think. I'd rather have a p/f/h system than grading, really.

Tufts grades by percentages I think. It later on gets translated into grades at the end of the courses.

I am under the impression that if a school doesn't rank it puts that much more pressure on the board scores to differentiate you from your peers. All the eggs in one basket.

You're right! For some reason, I thought I had read on Tufts' website that the courses were p/f/h. I suppose it was some other university.

No no no. Pass-fail graded dental schools STILL DO calculate a class-rank based on the percentage you've received for a particular class, or the average calculated by the module courses. There is something called an "internal transcript" and ALL dental schools have this. Ask your academic record office. This is to give an indication of the dental students' performances at these pass/fail dental schools when they apply for residency or for specialty programs.
