I wasnt aware any school forced you to buy them. In my class everyone did buy them but it was our option and we were left to our own devices.

i think most schools require it nowadays. its not directly part of your tuition, but, similar to your instrumentation fee, the school loan officers know it is part of the cost of going to school.

another drop in the bucket.

At Colorado it is incorporated in your first years fees... So, you have no choice but to purchase them through the company that they chose... 🙂

I've heard Penn and Creighton are like that as well. From an Orascoptic rep.

Soul, do most students at TU purchase/use them?

There's definitely been an increase in people buying loupes this semester in my class alone, we just started doing cavity preps. I'm pretty sure most students and faculty practice with loupes or some kind of magnification.

magnification in dentistry is becoming the norm. in theory if the working length is correct, it would also promote ergonomics. endo particularly loves mag and our school's department has crazy telescope type magnification units.

stony brook encourages all students to buy loupes, and it is in our loan budget. most people get designs but a few guys got orascoptic or even zeiss.

UPenn doesn't force the students to get loupes. We have the option. Most people get them (after using them I can't imagine why someone wouldn't) and if you choose to get them you can get whatever kind you want. Every rep will come and buy the class lunch if you sit through their pitch. Then you make your decision.

Im a DS1 at colorado and yes they do make you buy them.. The company is SurgiTel. You can decide between all the different Oakley styles and SurgiTels own line. I personally bought SurgiTel brand with the optics mounted within the lenses. They were cheaper than the Oakleys costing around $750. The Oakleys range between $800 and $1200. I really like mine. SurgiTel will also let you try the ones you ordered for a month and if you don't like them you can replace them with a different model. Lopes are essential for the dental field.. They are life changers..
