Which schools want us to send in printed AMCAS apps?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The following info below pertains to schools that I am applying to:

Secondaries online:
Yale
Washington Univ.
Rochester
Saint Louis Univ.
Baylor
Tulane
Dartmouth

Schools that will take printed AMCAS:
Yale
Washington Univ.
Saint Louis Univ.
Tulane

Washington Univ. just emailed me stating that it will be mid-september 😱 before they anticipate being able to begin processing of applications that are submitted through AMCAS.

Thanks Baylor. By the way, doesn't the printed AMCAS have some bugs that cause it to be different from the actual screen app? How would the med schools be able to decipher these errors I wonder...?

are you saying that dartmouth will not accept application printouts. i find that hard to believe considering that they will eventually be forced to ask for them. i'm sending it anyway. besides, they want to expedite the process, so what the hell are they goingt to be able to do with a short secndary that doesn't mention any grades, extracurriculars, or scores. c'mon!

bubbaap,

Yes the AMCAS printout has been known to have bugs in it. However I looked at mine and it seems right from what I can tell.

drago,

Maybe Dartmouth does accept AMCAS printouts, but as far as I know they have not emailed anyone with alternate instructions or posted anything about it on their website. Thats what I was going by, I wasnt stating for certain that they would NOT accept the printout, I just wasnt aware of any alternate policy they instituted yet.

The thing about a lot of the secondaries is that it will do no good to send them in early if the schools don't first have our AMCAS apps. So, I'm not even starting the secondaries that won't accept AMCAS print-outs along with them. For example, I went to sart the Baylor secondary, but then noticed that it said that it should be submitted up to 30 days AFTER they receive AMCAS. I'm wondering with this new delay in transmission, whether I should just submit Baylor's and other secondaries and send a printout...but these schools haven't told us to do so, so it might be a waste...what are other people doing about this? 😡 screw AMCAS!!

While it certainly wouldn't hurt to complete secondaries now, I have been dragging my feet. As saffron mentioned, many schools won't do anything until they get the AMCAS transmission anyway. As for me, I am dealing with a rec letter snafu that will prevent me from getting any letters out for like another month, so I'm going to do a few secondaries but basically wait it out. I was concerned about the rec letter thing and emailed WUStL about the timeframe for application this year, and I was told this morning that even if my file isn't complete there until September 1st, they don't interview until mid-October so I'll still be fine. WUStL is different, though, in that they will review your file without waiting for AMCAS, so if any of you can complete your file there right now, you should go for it.

All,

Clearly when we send the printed copy of the AMCAS app, we do not want to include our list of designated schools. However, on the printed copy of AMCAS 02, some of my courses spill onto the page including my school choices. Do you think Yale and others will be peeved if we cut one of the pages in half?

Thanks.

I don't know....I heard that at MCW, they want you to include the list, so that they can confirm that you are a Regualr MD or MD/PhD candidate. I sent my full page in....hope it won't hurt me to have them see all my schools.

If you know a little HTML, you can just save your application, open it up under Word and then edit out the table with your desginated schools. I'd rather do this than send in a cut page.

When I called Wash U, the lady said that she thought they wanted an "official" copy. I too had asked her about cutting and pasting it into word, but I would assume they want an official copy that hasn't been "doctored" (heehee)

but that's not fair that a school will get to see your list!!! first of all, they don't have access to that information ordinarily, so there's no reason they should see it now. and secondly, the more schools on your list, the more they will question your genuine interest in theirs in particular. sure, realistically plenty of us just want to get into *any* med school, regardless of what it is, but this shouldn't factor into a school's admission decision when they were not provided this kind of info in the past.

It seems that Vanderbilt is asking applicants to send in printed applications. Once they receive the application they will send a secondary. This is very different from the way Vandy operated in the past, I understand, when only applicants chosen for interviews were asked to fill out secondaries. Anyway, I receieved the following forwarded message from my pre-med advisior today:

So to summarize these are the schools (at least the ones I'm applying to) that are taking copies of the AMCAS application:

1. Baylor COM
2. Medical College of Wisconsin
3. Tulane University
4. St. Louis University
5. Albert Einstein

I had a question for people deciding to send in a copy of their primary. There are still problems with the printed form of the AMCAS. I'm particularly worried about my essays because they still show up as one big, long paragraph. How are people planning on handling that? I was thinking of attaching Word copies of my essays w/ a note indicating my reasons for attaching them...but still not sure how exactly to handle that...

I don't remember where, but I know at least one of those schools that asked for it said specifically that they knew about the lack of paragraphs and didn't care. Since we're all in the same boat and that's one of the salient AMCAS bugs that everybody knows about, I wouldn't worry about it much. Of course, if it comes down to you or me and the school takes you instead because of your brilliant organization of thought in your essays, I'll wish I hadn't thought that way. 🙂

For MCOW and SLU I added a Word version of my practice vision and personal statement. They're too annoying to read on the AMCAS printout. I just included a cover letter with the whole thing indicating that I had done so, and why.

Thanks for the advice grasshopper and barton. 🙂

I just received GW's secondary!!! The attached letter requests a printed "unofficial" copy of the AMCAS application.

🙂

am i blind? i'm really not seeing where SLU requests an AMCAS printout....

never mind...i found it on the website. but that's sneaky! i still can't find where on the letter or secondary i received in the mail it says anything at all about sending in a printout, if it does say at all....

You can add U Pitt to that list. Just got an email asking me to send a printed copy of my AMCAS application.

Just wanted to keep this thread going... It would be much easier to keep track of all the schools that are bypassing AMCAS on this thread instead of having 50 different threads spread out all over the forum.

Besides, as AMCAS continues to have transmittal problems I think its a wise assumption to state that this list will be growing substantially in the near future.

My essay printed out just fine. Thank God for this thread. I'm sending my AMCAS printout to WUSTL, Saint Louis U., Tulane
and doing their on-line secondaries. I'm a little unclear about whether to do the Geo. Wash, UVA and Mt. Sinai secondaries as well as sending the AMCAS print-out. This is getting darn confusing to keep track of.

Is Mt. Sinai accepting paper apps?

Does anybody know if any of the California schools want printed copies of the AMCAS app?

I don't think the UC's want them right now. Stanford definitely does not -- I ran into one of the Stanford admissions officers the other day who said that some people have been sending unsolicited paper applications to them, but the admissions office isn't even glancing at them -- I think they want to wait until everyone's app gets transmitted so as to be fair to everyone (since right now everyone is in the same boat).

They have their supplemental app on-line, as step two of the application process for everyone. I'm kind of assuming that any school that has their supplement on-line and doesn't screen for secondaries would be happy to get a paper app now, unless they say otherwise. Rochester and Pittsburgh are taking paper apps, but Rochester specifically says not to return their secondary until they've notified you they've received the AMCAS app, and Pittsburgh says not to send a secondary until they ask for it. I figure if they don't really want a paper app, they'll just toss it -- it can't hurt to send it.

can someone give me a list of the schools that require aMCAS application?

if you could please type up and updated list then I would really appreciate it...

thnaks

Wachamacallit- If you mean which schools do not participate in AMCAS _at all_ then there are very few. All the Texas schools except Baylor have their own system. I think Yale finally converted over to AMCAS, but to the best of my knowledge, NYU still does not use them. Otherwise, nearly every US medical school uses AMCAS. (Somebody please correct me if I've ommitted any schools pro or con)

If you mean which schools are accepting paper copies, the list is ever-changing and likely to keep expanding. But, I would wager that this is only a temporary measure to help get the process started and to distribute secondaries or tentative interview offers. I doubt highly that any school will bypass the entire process and eventually accept you without a verified online AMCAS application at some point.

Columbia does not use AMCAS. They also have only one app, no secondary or supplemental.

thanks for your response

but does anyone have the updated list of which schools are accepting paper AMCAS due the problems amcas is having....

I know yale, rochestet etc etc...does anyone have the list? pwweeeeeeeeeeeeease

Johns Hopkins wants a paper copy of AMCAS. Go to this site where you can sign up to be sent their secondary. You need to use Internet Explorer or Netscape 6.

i don't think rochester is accepting paper copies. also, from other posts it seems like transmission of apps are picking up. hopefully we won't have to deal with the hassle of doing this for too many other schools.

Yup, that was it. They don't want you to send it until they ask for it. You've seen their web page asking for a paper copy of AMCAS, right? If not, it's at University of Pittsburgh School of Medecine AMCAS Notice
