In all ortho programs, an original research project and a corresponding manuscript of publishable quality is a requirement to graduate and obtain a certificate. Is the same true in other specialty programs?
I believe most/(all?) of the programs that grant a masters degree at the end require a thesis/pubs. Some 6 year OMFS programs tend to be more pro-research than others, but I think the majority don't have it as a graduation requirement.
OMFS programs do have a research requirement. AFAIK, a lot of times, residents just end up doing a case report or something simple that may or may not end up getting published.
