when i went to high school in indiana, i had NO asian friends. In fact I knew maybe 2 asians. i didn't date any asian girls...i mean i had the idea that asian girls weren't pretty at all.

then i moved to california, and my life changed drastically after that 😉 (but my gf is still white lol)

2 asians constitutes a 'small asian population' to me.

I'm Taiwanese too! Maybe the only one from Oklahoma on these boards though. . .

I am from India and I have always wanted to meet Taiwanese Americans, heard they have been very successful in the Internet business by collaboarting with people back home in Taiwan. On the other hand, I think Taiwan needs to be left alone by China!
Good luck with med. school/applications 😀

Bangalore though, is taking over the computer world! I think Dell is outsourcing most of its technical support to India...a few days ago when I called, I talked to an Indian staff, and from the questions he asked, I inferred that he wasn't within the U.S.

What's "Sai Jai"? I'm not one of *those* Taiwanese people 😉

That's different kind of business. I am talking about e-commerce, which has become a big thing. Offshoring/outsourcing is a totally different issue

are there any Taiwanese/Chinese here on SDN? 😛
which medical school are you heading to this summer? 🙂

The first word is "me" or "I' and the second word is "person." Right 🙂 ?

I wish I knew Chinese a bit better. My parents tried to teach me during the summers but I would always forget by the next summer. They finally gave up. I'm headed to GW. How about you?

haha i learned english when i was 6. (too bad i was born here... still had to take ESL) and so for like 5 years after - i had a fob accent to my english too. how unfortunate. i think i'm ok now though. maybe.

You know, I was born here but my parents took me back to Taiwan when I was 1 and then we moved back here when I was 4. For some reason they never taught me English so my 2nd grade teacher thought I was ******ed (literally). Did anyone else have a similar experience? (I was in ESL too. I don't remember learning anything in there, though). 🙂

I'm chinese. any chinese girls out there?

Yup 🙂.

My dad's family has been in Taiwan/ROC for generations, like Exmike's. But my mom's family only came to Taiwan/ROC after WWII. My dad even says he thinks the whole "I'm Taiwanese, not Chinese" thing is kind of ridiculous. Face it, we're both. And now that we/our families have immigrated to the US, we're also Americans and fill in the state residents.

I am very surprised that this thread's still up and running...

Are you from the DC area Imm? Any good Chinese restaurants? 😀

some of the best looking girls in so cal are of chinese/taiwanese descent. wait...what am i talking about? some of the best looking girls are...just everywhere of all races.

the one thing about leaving so cal that encourages me is - if i went to school here, there is NO WAY i would EVER concentrate. after being accustomed to going out all the time, the environment would be horrible for my study habits, which in essence is why corn country will be nice for me - nothing to do except study and do the occasional movie lol.

There's a small chinatown in DC. The restaurants there are not very good in my opinion. Those good restaurants are pretty much scattered throughout the city and the suburban area... You'll need a car to get to them...

Yes, when I went for my interview my husband and I went to a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown and it wasn't all that great. We will have cars though since we'll probably be living the the suburbs. Why do you put a  at the end of all your posts? Just curious.

OH! I 😍 Carmen. Have a great time. How many of you guys play a musical instrument or sing? Where you forced by your parents? I play the violin and piano. I was sort of forced but I like it now.

Newquagmire: What the heck is "sai jai"?

depending on intonation, it could mean several things, all of them rather undeservedly patronizing and derogatory.

who is carmen?

yeah, it's amazing that everyone knows of that little place off 60 freeway.... guess I'm a FOB too .... 🙄

gschl1234: yup, 7 yr of piano, hated it so much when I was little, and hate it even more now for not sticking it through ..... 🙁

I am heading up to Rowland Heights next few weeks to open a cellphone line ;P (cheaper there!)

any of you is doing the same thing? open the line at LA and use it on the other side of the country? 🙂

i assure you i am not being facetious. forgive my cultural ignorance, i am a farmboy.
I'm sorry since the other guy already posted that Carmen is an opera composed by Bizet, I thought the question was answered. I'm so very sorry if my comment was offensive because I didn't mean it that way at all. 🙂

all that follows from that is that bizet is an opera composer. it doesn't tell me if he is famous or rather obscure or anything else. no worries, i'm just a farmboy =)

都系香港最好. 你門講廣東話嗎?

Not that my Chinese is very good...but you had to go and use traditional characters to make it harder, didn't you? 😛 我看不懂.

American citizen, Caribbean descent, studied East Asian languages, I can read it.

😉

wow, so many asian themed threads on SDN!

taiwan is hot as hell. i remember being suffocated by the heat as i walked the streets there with my parents (it was literally like breathing in a sauna). i would beg them to let me rest in the air-conditioned shops.

I am (not) Taiwanese...but I know how to use an internet translator
